Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead has apparently had a chunk of its ownership bought up by Tencent

Apparently the studio behind co-op shooter Helldivers 2 is very likely paying out literal dividends for Chinese megacorp Tencent, as Swedish news sites are reporting that Tencent bought up a 16% stake in Arrowhead Game Studios back in July of 2024 a few months after the shooter released.

The stocks bought up by Tencent cost about $86M at the time of the deal, but according to financial site Dagens Industri, Arrowhead is now valued at around $532M, with an operating profit of $76M.

What this means for the shooter in general is likely almost nothing, particularly since this happened a year ago. If anything, studio CCO Johan Pilestedt notes that this could mean the game’s reach in China could grow deeper.

Of course the bigger matter is the continued consolidation of gaming under one immense umbrella: Recall that Tencent already owns pieces of studios like FromSoftware, completely owns Riot Games and Inflexion Games, and most recently bought up 25% of a recently formed Ubisoft subsidiary. Investment news is fun, isn’t it?
