It’s been just under a week since we first got a look at NetEase’s Sea of Remnants, and we’re still not sure what the hell it actually is. Beyond stylish, probably gacha-filled, and very possibly multiplayer or MMO-adjacent if its Steam page is any indication. Otherwise we get blurbs about “endless loops of memory,” “absurdist glitch aesthetics,” and how the city of Orbtopia “breathes in noise, spice, and a little chaos.” Also a pirate gorilla rises from obscurity at night?
The latest trailer from the game is not going to provide many more answers as it features a player character walking through Orbtopia while asking everyone he meets where Orbtopia is for some reason. Interspersed through what appear to be cinematic vignettes are what also appear to be gameplay peeks at street fights that can break out, character customization, and at least one round of mahjong.
The video’s description otherwise points out how Orbtopia works as a hub for players to repair their ship, upgrade their gear, and ready for the next adventure. “And that’s just the beginning—what happens in Orbtopia is Orbtopia,” the description also says. Really the whole thing is equal parts enthralling and deeply confusing, so try to make sense of it all as you watch below.
