Trion MMORPG Trove turns 10 years old with Sunfest events as Gamigo says no to roadmaps

Trion’s voxelbox MMORPG Trove will forever hold a special place in our hearts, even if its birthday is making us feel as if our bones are crumbling to dust. The MMORPG officially launched on July 9th, 2015, following a beta that began in 2014, which means we’re staring down the barrel of the game’s 10th birthday, and current owner Gamigo says this month will be the game’s “biggest celebration yet.” That celebration will apparently include a month-long Sunfest event, live today through the entirety of July (except on the Switch, where it will apparently start “at a later date”).

“Trovians can look forward to a feast of sweet treats, including a new three-phase questline, with each phase unlocking additional rewards & quest steps, progressing the story of Sunfest across the whole celebratory month. […] In Sunfest 2025, the familiar Trove questline formula received a special anniversary rework. This year, the quest has been segmented into three phases, each lasting at least a week. Throughout the month, players will progress through the Sunfest quest as they craft explosively fun fireworks, bake sugary birthday cakes, and more as they aid each House’s quartermaster in the party preparations. However, it’s not all festivities and fun! During the quest to throw the ultimate party, Shadowy Invaders will begin appearing throughout the region, threatening the people of Trove and overall killing the party vibes.”

The studio’s monthly newsletter also addresses cleaning up future patch notes, a planned 10th anniversary livestream, and roadmaps. As in, you’re not getting a roadmap.

“We currently share some of our upcoming plans month by month in our community letters, and that’s the level of visibility we feel confident providing at the moment,” the studio says. “We understand that many of you would like a more detailed look further ahead, but we would prefer to avoid setting expectations.” Of course, not having a roadmap does indeed set expectations, just not the positive kind, yeah?

Finally, Gamigo says that the team’s ongoing move from cloud to physical servers is done, setting the game up for “better stability, smoother gameplay, and fewer disruptions.”

Fun fact: Researching this piece reminded me we’ve been using the term “voxelbox” for at least 10 years, huh.

Another fun fact: The MMO is apparently still doing super well, which explains why Gamigo is still supporting it. “The title sees an average daily user count in the tens of thousands, an average concurrent user count in the several thousands, and a steady influx of new users joining each month across both PC and consoles,” Gamigo says.

Happy birthday, Trove.
