Star Citizen players try to call attention to reportedly widespread duping and cheating issues

Sure, Star Citizen might be in an alpha state right now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that its in-game economy should be potentially wrecked by an exploit or that cheating should be shrugged off. That’s the threat facing the game currently, as players in the official forums and across Reddit are alleging that the game is rampant with cheaters, hackers, and dupers.

A pair of posts try to call attention to what is reportedly a now widespread duping bug that lets players hold a material item in their hand and utilize the mobiGlas UI in order to create multiples of the item. The linked Reddit thread also shares a list of suspected bot accounts that are likely utilizing the exploit. Other posts on Reddit are further noting that players are reportedly somehow able to rip gear and inventory right from a living character, while the list of issues in-game further confirm problems like invulnerable FPS players.

The issues are apparently widespread enough that players are instructing each other on best practices and calling for ban waves or a full wipe, though there are some who argue against such actions or even try to talk down how much impact things like dupes will actually have because there is no player-run economy.

These issues are arriving at an arguably bad time for SC, as today will kick off the Foundation Festival event with a free fly promotion from July 2nd through the 14th along with the sandbox’s updated referral program.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2025, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $800M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
