Games opening their own official Discords is just the way of things in these increasingly frustrating modern times, but we would argue that an announcement of this magnitude – the kind that could affect long-standing Aion NA players – maybe shouldn’t be stuffed only in Discord. So we’re fortunate that one of our readers tipped us off to the fact that old characters are indeed facing deletion and you probably wouldn’t have known about it unless you were eyeballing the MMORPG’s Discord.
News of this was first shared by one Discord member, who shared a screenshot of an email that announced characters who haven’t been logged on since January 2020 were subject to deletion unless they were played at some point before July 14th. An official reply confirmed the email was legit and explained the rationale, writing, “For some perspective, we spend ~45 minutes during maintenance backing up 15+ years worth of character data, we’d like to reduce that time for all of you and hope to see some performance/load time gains as well.” A search for “character deletion” within the Discord returned at least a couple of other such instances.
We again repeat that this information was only available because some folks shared the fact that they received an email in Discord and a mod of that Discord replied to confirm the news; this was not being shared on the official site or its Twitter at the time of this story’s writing. So we’ll just alert all of you: Log in to your old characters before July 17th or else they face the barber’s blade. Also, come on, NCsoft.
