MJ Guthrie

Community Manager

When not immersed in her favorite virtual worlds, MJ can be found hanging out with her family, reading, coaching/playing sports, writing fiction, singing, and dabbling in graphic design (in random order, depending on mood and season). Her favorite part of MMOs? Observing the dynamics of virtual communities. That psychology degree has to come in handy somewhere, doesn't it?

MJ's Massively Overpowered adventures can be found many places: She investigates Secret World Legends/The Secret World's conspiracies in Chaos Theory, chronicles the EverQuest franchise in EverQuesting, practices survival in many sandboxes with The Survivalist, and livestreams for the Stream Team.

The Secret World’s Issue 14 will be in Egypt, releases in March

Today’s Streaming Ones dev livestream announced that The Secret World’s Issue #14 will take place in the familiar sands of Egypt — and that it will release in March. However, that doesn’t mean that everything will be the same old, same old; players will enjoy two new instances, six main missions, two investigation missions, new features, and a new monster.

As promised before, the new issue focuses on self-contained stories instead of following the main storyline. Part of that story includes delving into the past of a liked character (whose voice was teased out in the stream).

EverQuesting: Landmark’s big claim news

Holy moly, it happened! As you might surmise by the not-so-subtle surprise in my voice, we’ve finally got a chunk of Landmark news. It’s been a long while. The silence that has been surrounding both this game and EverQuest Next has been deafening, and I am very glad to see the wheels of progress are actually turning — at least for Landmark. And I can certainly hope that translates into the same for EQN. Even though that will remain to be seen, I celebrate the continued development of Landmark; I am still looking forward to this game and the enticing features that will put the power of storytelling into the hands of players.

Sadly, the news has nothing to do with the AI or the storytellng system.  The announcement was focused on new landscapes, expanded claim sizes, and underground caverns. Today we’ll concern ourselves primarily with the claim aspects. Once once you get past the shock and joy of new information, you find that there are now way more questions. I have a ton, and many other Landmark fans do as well. To be fair, Daybreak has come back with the response that this update is really huge and more information will be forthcoming. Hopefully, some of these issues will be addressed when it does.

Black Desert Korea’s new bosses pack a powerful punch

In answer to player requests for more challenging content, devs added a new boss system to Black Desert in Korea. The bosses actually stayed the same except for getting an increase to their HP and transforming into Mack trucks. OK, so that last part isn’t quite accurate: These new bosses don’t transform into the truck but they definitely hit like one. We’re talking hitting hard enough to one-shot high level players in end-game gear.

The new boss version is summoned by combining five daily or three weekly login scrolls to create a super saiyan scroll. Steparu.com previewed the party version of a new summoned boss and shared the experience in the video below.

The Stream Team: Airlifting ARK’s dinos

Now that MassivelyOP’s MJ and the tribe have a quetzal at their disposal, it’s time to show off what this behemoth can do. Because of its massive size, the quetzal can pick up almost any other dino and fly it about. A great use of this skill is to remove a desired dino from its dangerous wild habitat and transport it to a nice, comfy taming pen. And that is exactly what MJ is going to do. Tune in live at 3:00 p.m. to see if she can safely tame a mini-spino.

The Stream Team: Raising a Black Desert black smoke buddy

Can that creepy little Black Desert black smoke buddy actually get creepier? Yes, yes it can, as MassivelyOP’s MJ recently learned. She was just questing along, humoring the freaky little puff, when it suddenly sprouts teeth! That freaked her out a bit. MJ has been avoiding learning any spoilers of what the creature turns onto, so each transformation will take her by surprise. First, it looks like it nabbed grampa’s false teeth. What’s next — granny’s spectacles? Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. to continue to watch this little psychotic wisp transform (and check out the servers on launch day).
