Lost Ark Online announced for China, gets new website and trailer

Lost Ark is indeed heading to China, a fact announced at Tencent Games Carnival 2015. Besides debuting a new trailer, representatives from Smilegate and Tencent Games took to the stage to answer a few questions from media about testing time-frames, other platforms, and more.

Testing for Lost Ark is currently anticipated to start in early 2016 in Korea and mid-year in China, and the devs are focusing on avoiding repetitive content. Anyone who prefers console or mobile games also have a chance to see the title on those platforms; the representatives stated that these other platforms are being seriously considered, but for now the developers are “concentrating on optimizing and running the South Korean and China servers.”

Check out the Chinese trailer below, and feel free to poke around the new website.

Penguins and angler fish board ARK as tribal warfare begins

ARK: Survival Evolved has gone to the birds — and the fish — in the latest update. On top of a feathers and fur graphical update, yesterday’s addition of update 223 introduced the adorable Kairuku Waitaki, better recognized as a penguin, and the deep-sea Melanocetus, or anglerfish. Both new creatures are useful in the quest for survival.

Although the penguins aren’t really any good in a fight, players may want to collect a rookery of them as they exude body heat that can keep you warm while adventuring on the tundra. On a more morbid note, these docile creatures also have blubber that works as polymer, with the highest concentration found in the babies. The distinctive light found on the anglerfish makes it the perfect companion for underwater exploring, whereas harvesting this fish nets materials used for making a long-lasting fuel and organic lights for your house. Get a glimpse of them both in the video below.

In addition to new creatures, this update introduces the new Tribal Warfare Alliance system. Tribes can now declare war against each other for a specific time frame that all parties agree upon, encouraging large-scale PvP instead of offline raiding.

Durango brings a dino MMO to mobile devices

With the popularity of ARK: Survival Evolved, there’s no doubt that the mix of multiplayer survival and dinosaurs is a smash hit with gamers. Nexon is looking to bring a similar (although not identical) title to the mobile scene with Durango.

Durango is an isometric MMO in which players can fight and tame dinos. Players side with warring clans and put their survival skills to the test as they build up settlements and mow everything with two or four legs down with powerful weaponry.

Nexon said that it will be hosting a limited beta test for Durango in December. You can watch the quick trailer for that beta after the jump!

The Secret World and ARK get behind Extra Life

Gaming communities across the globe are throwing their support behind Extra Life, the 24-hour gaming marathon designed to raise money for Children’s Network Miracle Hospitals. We’ve already reported on how Trion Worlds is contributing to the event, and now you can add both The Secret World and ARK: Survival Evolved to the movement’s supporters.

Funcom posted a list of The Secret World community teams that have signed up to participate in the marathon. It also said that it will be giving a prize pack to the top two donors to each of the teams. Meanwhile, ARK is hosting a “survival of the fittest” PvP battle in which the winning teams will get a cash prize and an additional donation will be made to Extra Life on their behalf.

Extra Life’s all-day marathon takes place tomorrow, November 7th.

ARK’s new giganotosaurus towers over the t-rex

Studio Wildcard has added a new dino to ARK: Survival Evolved. Finding, hunting, and taming the giganotosaurus requires top-of-the-line gear and skills, and it represents a late-game challenge for elite players and raiding tribes, according to Wildcard’s press release.

Fighting the new beast is not for the feint of heart, as its rage grows with each hit it takes, and extra rage means extra energy for its deadly bites and extra stamina. Today’s patch also adds swords and a set of primitive and modern shields designed for advanced melee combat usage.

ARK begins Fear Evolved event

For the next week, ARK: Survival Evolved is no more. Instead, the game has transformed into ARK: Fear Evolved for the Halloween season.

The island has transformed into something far more sinister for the occasion, and considering that this was a place where bloodthirsty dinosaurs roamed, that’s saying something. Now there’s the fearsome DodoRex, a creature that’s so imposing that the devs are hosting a contest to see which player can film a kill of the beast on a PvP server.

Players will encounter animated dino skeletons and zomdodos (zombie dodos, of course) while being given the opportunity to craft several new Halloween-themed items. The team even hinted that there will be crates out there with free game codes for friends. Unfortunately, friends are not included in the crates, so you’re on your own to procure those.

Check out the trailer below.

The Daily Grind: What’s the best early access MMO you’ve played?

I’m afraid that early access is here to stay, and as I look over the icons on my desktop and the entries on my Steam games list, it’s distressing to see how many of them are some form of pay-before-the-game’s-done.

There’s been at least one gem, though, and that’s ARK: Survival Evolved, which has more features than most “feature-complete” MMOs, and which has a crazy frequent patch schedule that both fixes bugs and adds all kinds of new stuff to the dino survival sandbox on a regular basis.

What about you, MOP readers? I know you probably dislike early access as much as I do, but have their been any early access games that you were proud to support? Which one was the best?
