Betawatch: April 17th, 2015

Path of Exile has another big update on the way! It has fun new skills like Golems, Warcries, and Golemcries! Maybe not so much with the last one. The point is that there’s an update, it’s in testing, and you can help test it if you follow the right steps. Glorious!

Other testing news from around the test-web-blog-o-sphere (patent pending on that nightmare portmanteau, for the record):

You want some more testing goodness? Well, read on for our full list, ladies, gentlemen, and those who fall into neither category! There are more tests to be had.

Black Desert adjusts for ‘casual lite’ Korean market

Every game changes during testing, but Black Desert seems to have changed even more significantly compared to its original vision from the fan standpoint. One such fan recently penned an article explaining what changes the game has made since its first iteration and why fans are frustrated by them. What’s behind all those changes? A new interview with Pearl Abyss explains that there’s a pretty simple reason: Testers demanded them.

“The tendency of users changed a lot in the past couple of years, and the changes are lot more certain with players exposed to mobile environment,” PA told the fansite. “There are a lot of casual lite gamers in Korean market. We are servicing our game based on our players’ demands.”

Western fans who aren’t happy with the shifts can take heart that the version of the game that lands in North America and Europe will be different from the Korean version. There’s also a spot of hope for players eager to try the game for themselves, as the western version is apparently due to enter testing on an accelerated schedule. Take a gander at the full interview for details on why the game is what it currently is.

Black Desert demos its new Valkyrie class

Eager to take a look at the newest class being added to Black Desert? The fine folks at Steparu have posted a trailer demonstrating the class in action against random generic enemies, giving players a look at how the class operates. Parts of it are similar to how the Warrior plays, but the visual effects and other skills are entirely distinct to the Valkyrie.

The visual effects of the class have been overhauled to stark white flares and silhouettes, which certainly give it a unique visual impact. If you’d like to run around as a lady smashing enemies into the ground and summoning holy storms to demolish your enemies, checking out the trailer past the break might be a fine idea.

Would you like to talk about Black Desert? Stuff’s happening with the game. You can learn how to hunt whales, white or otherwise, and you can learn about the game’s next class. Or you can read a fandom rant about the issues that have cropped up with the game during its testing phases, although as always you might want to take that rant with a grain of salt or two. It’s a good habit to get into.

Elsewhere in the MMO space, meanwhile:

You want more? Ah, all right, jump on past the break and check out our full list as always.

The Daily Grind: Are MMOs becoming outpaced by tech?

Whenever I talk about Ultima Online to someone who wasn’t there when it was a big thing, I admit to feeling as if I have to justify its existence because of its graphics, which were shallow in 1997, never mind 2015. The game is still amazing, feature for feature, but it’s been eclipsed by the advance of technology.

That’s the topic an anonymous Massively Kickstarter donor wished to bring up for today’s Daily Grind. “Will MMOs keep pace with advancing technology,” he asks, “or wither?”

Black Desert’s new class is a Valkyrie Shield Maiden

Black Desert’s Korean beta test is getting a new class this month, according to a translation at Steparu. The fantasy sandbox is scheduled to receive “three big updates” before the end of April, including the Valkyrie Shield Maiden who boasts healing spells, “powerful holy skills,” and warrior-like combat. Steparu speculates that she may be akin to a Paladin or Cleric.

The other updates feature a couple of new dungeons and a new area called Pirate Island. Developer Pearl Abyss is also planning regional war events, purportedly on Sundays as the beta continues.

Black Desert fans are troubled about game changes

When the primary beta process for an upcoming MMO is taking place in another region and language, it’s often difficult to understand how the game is shaping up. One Black Desert fansite understands this, which is why it’s posted a beta report that traces major changes and design decisions through the different testing phases.

These fans are concerned about how Black Desert is developing because of significant changes from the original vision to the current version. Some of these changes include the elimination of two of the three types of guilds, the increased pace of leveling, the denial of one-to-one trading, and a problematic PvP system.

Here’s how to hunt whales in Black Desert

Would you like to hunt whales in Black Desert? No, not the big cash shop spenders, but actual whales in the ocean and stuff. Apparently you can, as shown in a video recently posted by Steparu.

He describes the whale hunt as “very relaxing and peaceful,” despite the chaos inherent in several player ships and nearly seven minutes of spells and gunfire before the beast is subdued. Click past the cut to have a look.

Black Desert celebrates 100-day beta mark

To rub it in to everyone else in the world, it is our duty to announce that Korean beta testers have been enjoying Black Desert for 100 days now.

The fantasy title began its open beta test on December 17, 2014, and the team is waving its hands in the air like it just don’t care now that it’s hit its centidiurnal. Apparently Black Desert is doing quite well in the region, having topped some of the local charts. The team has a lot planned for the game, including the introduction of the Valkyrie class and several beta events.

You can watch the 100-day celebration video after the break!

New Valkyrie class is coming to Black Desert

Korean publisher Daum has announced that fantasy sandbox Black Desert will be getting a seventh playable class, which is “scheduled to be released or previewed in April,” according to Steparu and fansite

It’s called the Valkyrie, and right now it looks like a “shielded offensive type,” though Steparu notes that it may see some revisions as did the Beast Master and Blader before it. The devs are also adding a guild ranking system, some sort of “hardcore” party content called phantom black spirits, and life skills clothing to the Korean beta test.

There’s a preview video just past the break.

Here’s what a Black Desert raid boss looks like

If you’ve got a spare 20 minutes and an urge to see a Black Desert raid boss go down, Steparu’s got a new video for you. Unfortunately he terms the encounter “extremely disappointing” on account of its dull tank-and-spank nature and the triviality of the whole enterprise given his gear.

That said, it’s probably worth a look if you’re at all curious about the upcoming fantasy sandbox MMO, so we’ve embedded it for you just past the break.
