Perfect Ten: Exploring MMORPGs from the far corners of the world

Have you ever noticed that while there’s an entire world out there, most all of the MMORPGs we discuss and play tend to either be ones crafted in the USA or imports from China or Korea? We even have a shorthand for this: “western” and “eastern” MMOs. We’re usually not talking about entire hemispheres with these references, but rather about categorizing three countries that are big into the MMORPG business.

But what about the rest of the world? Are all of these other countries so uncaring about this genre that they’ve never tried their hand at making an MMO? Of course not; as I’m about to show you, there are plenty of online RPGs that have been made in countries other than China, the USA, and South Korea. It’s just that for various reasons, those three countries ended up fostering concentrations of video game developers who knew how to create these types of games.

So let’s take a tour around the world and see if we can’t give some credit to other countries for their contributions to the MMORPG genre past, present, and future. Before you click the link, see how many you can name off the top of your head!

Massively OP’s guide to MMO Halloween 2016

“Two things I did on Hallows Night: / Made my house April-clear / Left open wide my door / to the ghosts of the year.”  ~ “All Hollows Night” by Lizette Woodworth Reese

Is your door open to the ghosts and ghouls of MMORPGs this season? They are definitely shambling up your walkway, looking to tell you of the grim delights of the holiday in your favorite online games. Indeed, Halloween season is upon us, which means that MMOs have an excuse to break out their favorite yearly festivities.

With so much to look at and do, you might be in a terrible fright trying to figure out what to do first. We consulted our Massively OP gravedigger Bram (he’s on retainer), who offers surprisingly good advice for sorting out the Halloween season in MMOs and getting the most out of the holiday. We recorded his words in this guide, although beware to the soul that reads them all — Bram might be seeing you before the week is up. MUAHAHAHA.

Cabal Online releases a new battle arena, ushers in Caballoween

Need something to do in Cabal Online? No worries: The older MMO is backing up to your house and unloading a dump truck’s worth of content to fill your month.

First up is its Legends Unleased update, which went live today. The content patch includes a new battle arena, a fight with the Death Knight Baldus, a trio of additional accessories, and “powerful class-specific abilities” to aid with their battles.

If that’s not enough, the game also kicked off Caballoween, which will run through November 7th. During the event, players will collect and assemble the scattered pieces of a spirit’s body, hunt for Jack O’Lanterns, and whip up some new potions and brews.

Giveaway: Grab a Cabal Online booster key in honor of its Steam launch

Classic Cabal Online launched on Steam this past week, reintroducing gamers to the 2005 title.

Nearly a thousand years after its devastation, the CABAL leader Faust prophesized the rise of an evil force that would, once again, ruin the land of Nevareth.

That evil has finally come. With only eight surviving members of the CABAL, it is now up to the champions of Nevarath to face the waves of minions that have invaded the world and uncover the truth behind them. Players will join millions in the battle over the sprawling and diverse lands of Nevareth, a stunning world that blurs the line between fantasy and science fiction. Featuring time-limited dungeons, blazing and fluid combat, challenging puzzles, an enthralling story, and a constant stream of new game content, CABAL Online invites MMO players to go forth and become a champion of Nevareth.

ESTsoft has granted Massively OP 500 keys for blessing beads, a premium seven-day item that gives the user access to premium channels, GPS teleportation for fast travel, 25% bonus boosts to EXP, skill EXP, drop rate, WEXP, pet EXP, and AXP, and a 200% boost to currency gains. The beads also cause T-Points to accumulate over time and unlock three additional craft request slots. It’s gonna be a good seven days is what we’re saying. And now we’re handing those keys out to you!

Cabal II brings in battle arenas, ranking system on Thursday

Gladiator combat is the focus of Cabal II’s upcoming Trial of Champions patch, which is slated to go live on September 10th.

Thursday’s patch will add in two new arenas: a monster arena for PvE players and a PvP battle arena. The monster arena will pit players against waves of mobs to see how long they can go without falling.

To up the ante of these activities, Cabal II is also including a ranking system that will track progress in both arenas and the PvP battlegrounds. Players who do exceptionally well in these areas will be rewarded at the end of each season.

Cabal II Blackwaves update washes in today

Cabal II, which launched in early July, is already rolling out its first post-release update. Called Blackwave, the patch adds plenty of new features for players to enjoy, including new gear and other fixes.

However, the centerpiece of the update is the titular Blackwave event, in which players will face off against 12 waves of mobs while competing with several other player groups to rack up the highest score. The rewards will be worth it, as ESTSoft says that the gear will be even better than that found in high-level dungeons.
