MJ Guthrie

Community Manager

When not immersed in her favorite virtual worlds, MJ can be found hanging out with her family, reading, coaching/playing sports, writing fiction, singing, and dabbling in graphic design (in random order, depending on mood and season). Her favorite part of MMOs? Observing the dynamics of virtual communities. That psychology degree has to come in handy somewhere, doesn't it?

MJ's Massively Overpowered adventures can be found many places: She investigates Secret World Legends/The Secret World's conspiracies in Chaos Theory, chronicles the EverQuest franchise in EverQuesting, practices survival in many sandboxes with The Survivalist, and livestreams for the Stream Team.

EverQuesting: Celebrating EQ’s 16th year

Happy birthday, sweet sixteen! That’s the song going through the air this week as EverQuest celebrates its latest claim to fame: membership in an exclusive club of MMORPGs old enough to get a license in the US. And while some might argue that 16 actually indicates old age in gaming, EQ bounded through the year with the zest and confidence of a young whippersnapper, showing no intention of slowing down. Even the infamous SOE changes didn’t completely derail the momentum, as evidenced by a hearty multi-month party schedule to celebrate the occasion.

This past year has certainly had its ups and downs. Will EQ be able to keep up the momentum throughout this next year in light of recent events? That’s the million-dollar question, and many are eagerly awaiting the answer! While time will certainly supply it, let’s take this moment to look back and then enjoy the party going on right now.

Landmark is abolishing claim upkeep

Landmark landowners who are weary of mining copper to keep their claims will soon earn a reprieve. While today’s hotfix disables the ability to pay using Station Cash, next week’s patch will remove copper as the upkeep currency. In fact, players will no longer have to pay upkeep at all! Instead, players will maintain their land ownership simply by logging in. The system is simple: Players will have an upkeep timer that will reset every time they log into the game. As long as a player logs in before the timer expires, his or her claims are safe.

How long is this timer? That part’s not quite as simple. Each player has a base timer (seven days for new players, and the personal maximum upkeep pre-pay length for current players) that grows by one day for every two days of logging in. That means that not only does the timer reset each time a player logs in, but it also increases to give a longer buffer.

Landmark will have just one more character wipe

Ever since players learned Landmark will definitely have another character wipe, we’ve all been very eager to know all the details. Those details are now in: Producer Terry Michaels has posted answers that address the most frequently expressed concerns. For one, this character and claim wipe combination, which will occur on or near April 29, 2015 (after the Qeynos competition concludes), does not herald the start of open beta. And two, although there will be a claim-only wipe before open beta, this is the last character wipe. Michaels emphasized,

We’re taking this opportunity to do the *only* character wipe we intend to do. That’s correct; we no longer believe it will be necessary to do a character wipe when we transition from Closed Beta to Open Beta. We *will* do a claim-only wipe when we transition to Open Beta in the future so that everyone who purchased the Trailblazer pack will have their 2 days head start to stake their claim in the world of Landmark!

Get lucky loot with Marvel Heroes’ St. Patrick’s events

Every week is a new event in Marvel Heroes, and right now it’s a week-long St. Patrick’s Day party! Not only can players collect four-leaf clovers that offer the chance to defeat a specific boss for goodies and a loot bonus buff, but they will also get a daily gift just for logging in. There are also shared daily quests and rainbow pieces that can be crafted into a pot of gold legendary item.

Additionally, Marvel Heroes has also released a new Colossus costume. This outfit hails back to the hero’s origin story, when his steel skin and strength manifested itself in order to save his sister from being crushed while working on their family’s farm in Siberia. If you’d like your strong man to resemble an old-time newsy or hard-working farm boy, here’s your chance!

Labor changes, Pegasus mount coming to ArcheAge

Friday the 13th may have been a lucky day for ArcheAge fans! During Trion’s Friday livestream, Producer Merv “Khrolan” Lee Kwai revealed a move meant to increase the value of patron status: changing the offline labor regeneration rate to match the online rate. Starting about mid-April, paying players will accumulate 10 labor every five minutes whether or not they are logged in; there is no change to free accounts.

The livestream also highlighted more changes to Secrets of Ayanad coming later this month. On land, the necessary number of appraisal certificates will be determined by land size. Additionally, the Hasla raid boss Hanure the Hunter is getting a level bump to 55. In the air, a new gliding Pegasus mount will be available for purchase with loyalty points (approximately 625) or randomly from an Archeum Supply Crate. And in the water, fishing tournaments are slated to start next weekend.

Chaos Theory: The Secret World’s enhanced player experience

Amazing story, awesome cutscenes, phenomenal atmosphere, compelling missions, incredible NPCs… The Secret World definitely has a lot of good things going for it. It is an MMO in a class by itself, unlike so many of the MMOs we’re all used to. But that last positive is also a negative: There are some former players who never got far enough into the game to really experience all it has to offer. Some of the unfamiliar aspects of the game were too unfamiliar to get used to, and some things were just plain difficult (Ak’abs, anyone?). The learning curve was steep enough to put many players off, players who might otherwise have loved the setting and uniqueness of the world.

That’s where the newly released “Enhanced Player Experience” comes to the rescue. I sat down with Lead Designer Romain Amiel and Communications Manager Tor Egil Andersen to talk about these quality-of-life improvements and get a few behind-the-scenes details about this patch. Of course, you know I had to ask about Issue #11 and beyond as well!

Albion Online’s summer alpha to bring crafting, economy, and combat changes

Albion Online’s winter alpha event is over, but the dev team is utilizing the information gleaned from it to prepare for the next one coming in summer. In his latest development update, Founder and CEO Stefan Wiezorek outlines various changes in crafting, the economy, and combat that players can look forward to.

Economy-wise, mobs will drop fewer or no finished items, silver will be earned from PvP kills, guilds will have market places, and silver requirements will be removed for farming, planting, and crafting. Additionally, players will be able to trade gold and silver via a special market system instead of relying on global chat. The value of crafting is getting a bump with the introduction of crafting endurance, which will limit the supply of special or higher-tier items. And in the realm of combat, random Hell Gates will spawn demons that open a portal to a dungeon if defeated and special chests will spawn in PvP lands as an incentive to lure players there.

There’s also a new PvE faction system incoming, and devs are implementing a mechanism to combat pay-to-win. More details on all these systems and more can be found in the update notes.
