Lord of the Rings Online reverses course on incomparable gear rollback compensation

It took ’em a day, but it looks as if Standing Stone Games is going to do the right thing for Lord of the Rings Online players caught up in a recent snafu with this week’s patch. In a nutshell, the cost of specific gear pieces at a barter vendor was set too low as patched in. When SSG realized the mistake, it announced it was fixing the problem but also stripping players of the items they’d bought, with no compensation whatsoever. Let’s just say that didn’t go over well.

Now, following community uproar, the studio has agreed to fairly compensate players after all.

“For players who already purchased Item Level 330 Incomparable gear, we have several options available. When the hotfix is released, already-purchased level 330 Incomparable items will be able to be disenchanted with the Flame of Ancalamir to return the full Ash of Gorgoroth cost, plus a number of Shadowed Essence Boxes equal to the number of Essence Slots on the gear. Already-purchased Item Level 330 Incomparable Gear will also have its stats adjusted to be approximately equivalent to the level 330 rare gear available through the High-Enchanter, and the Essence Slots will remain. This allows players to utilize the gear if they choose. Following the hotfix, Incomparable gear will have its correct vendor cost.”

does it surprise anyone that the hot-fix to this hot mess is just another hot mess? https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?659055-Bugs-yet-again!

And there is the problem

“Already-purchased Item Level 330 Incomparable Gear will also have its stats adjusted to be approximately equivalent to the level 330 rare gear available through the High-Enchanter”

They do no even give exact numbers how much they strip down the gear and if it is then worth the equivalent of Ash gear broken down for it.

LOL never change Turbine. They might be calling themselves SSG but its still Turbine. How many MMO companies do you know have a meme in the urban dictionary?

Awesome game, bad company, LOL.

Never heard that one before and I’ve been with them since AC1 in 1999.
Guess that means I’ve never been Turbined. :)

Sounds like they’re slapping on a convoluted band aid as opposed to any real and meaningful compensation over this. Meanwhile, heads should be rolling over this PR debacle. Just saying.

Why not just do a one day database rollback? That’s happened in other MMO’s for equally trivial reasons, and nobody died.

No, bad idea. You screw over the whole player base who as a majority had nothing to do with the a small amount of time and access to cap level activities. Bad idea because most of us play multiple characters, get achievements that give us trait points, Lotro Points, items, etc and we spend real money on things.

Think it through, the nightmare that would cause for the whole player base on every server? Are you seeing it yet? I know I advanced a few characters during that time frame, spent some money and points at the store and multiple characters earned levels, achievements etc.

Also imagine the amount of Tickets that staff would have to deal with in order to correct every error it causes, the amount of gear returns, cash returns, point returns. Nope, you’d take a SNAFU and turn it into a FUBAR. No thanks.

“Nightmare” huh? As someone who lives through the Great Database Rollbacks of Christmas 2004 in Everquest 2… it’s really not that big a deal. Everyone loses a bit of progress, in a game that has no definitive end or time limit. Boo hoo.

Any money you spent would be refunded as part of the rollback, and whatever you purchased wouldn’t be in the older database image. There wouldn’t be any tickets to correct, beyond saying “No, your characters and account were reset to the point they were a day ago.”

It would probably be mildly traumatic to OCD people, as they’d now have to try to redo everything exactly the way they did it before so they don’t go crazy with subtle changes caused by different RNG drops.

If you don’t do that ASAP then it’ll have a negative impact on an even larger number of people, and it’d especially be a lot worse now. The latest patch also opened up the fall festival with the Haunted Burrow and other events. The player base on Brandywine has been more active than I’ve seen in awhile.

Well, yes… it’s far too late for that now. But if they’d done it as soon as they saw the problem, it would have been a minor inconvenience and not required dodgy solutions that people will STILL be unhappy about, as the other replies indicate they are.

approximately equivalent

Ugh, something about that is annoying. LOL

“Incomparable items will be able to be disenchanted with the Flame of Ancalamir to return the full Ash of Gorgoroth cost, plus a number of Shadowed Essence Boxes equal to the number of Essence Slots on the gear.”

This passes for dirty talk to Tolkien geeks. ROFL.

They should have simply left those who already bought the gear alone, adjusted the price and re-opened the npc. Sure, those folks get over on the cost for that one time, but it beats all the other options I’ve seen including this one.

This. End of story.

This is a bit misleading as it still puts players in a bind (that was not of their own making). Ah well…

Here’s a thought…instead of screwing up and quickly backpedaling, how about you take that day to think things through and not be idiots in the first place?

Must be a burden being so perfect you never make mistakes :p

Mistakes happen (especially in something as complex as an MMO) – the important thing is how you deal with them.

This though was a simple thing, a simple QC of the price list which obviously wasn’t done. You are correct Paul that mistakes happen, the proper way to handle them though is like so…

We’re sorry, we made an error and released an NPC with the incorrect price for items. Those who got the gear at this reduced price for the short period of time, consider it a bonus for you all. We’ll re-open the NPC with the actual prices after a hot fix restart.

Instead of you get some silence, then some hemming and hawing, throw in a dose of caustic responses by the CM and then a fix idea that doesn’t really sit well with anyone and pretty much places the blame on the customer and inconveniences the customer.

So yeah, correct no one is perfect, player, game developer we’re all prone to errors. It’s how you handle the errors that sets the standard. SSG is showing us a Daybreak Games mentality which I don’t appreciate personally.

Must be a burden to consider that the OP is quite likely aware he’s far from perfect, but that wasn’t the point of his post. o.O

the important thing is how you deal with them.

That’s the “screwing up” I’m talking about. What, did you think I meant “never cause a bug in your software?”

Reader

That’s how I read your original comment yeah :) Agreed that their response has been less than perfect…

Fair enough. : )
