So a friend of mine had never played World of Warcraft. This, of course, is fine; there is no test you have to pass in which you must have played at least this many MMORPGs or your opinions don’t count. But he had an interesting statement about not wanting to try it out, because he found it actively intimidating at this point. And you know what? Considering the game is two decades old and has gone through a high point of cultural relevance before a rather precipitous decline, I can kind of understand it!

My point is not that you should be intimidated to start playing a new MMORPG so much as I can understand how someone would be. Games that have a lot of history and inertia built up can be intimidating. New games can feel daunting. Games outside of your usual wheelhouse can be unusual. You could be playing Final Fantasy XI, which famously hates anything approaching tutorials or even explaining its own mechanics! So are there any MMORPGs you found intimidating to start playing?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
