You need to see Elite Dangerous’ new character creator, ‘Holo-Me’

Elite Dangerous players, it’s time to get hyped: During yesterday’s stream, Frontier announced a brand-new toy for the game, a commander creator. Known as “Holo-Me” in-lore, the tool will allow players to change their appearance — well, their holographic representations, anyway — from inside their ships, from their outfits to hair and even facial symmetry. Intriguingly, you can change your appearance whenever you want, including characteristics like gender and facial structure, and Frontier says that all of the “base” faces in the game were built using the in-game engine, which demonstrates the range of faces the tool is capable of producing.

There’s much more to the stream including the new camera suite, the dolphin ship (so retro!), and a megaship outpost called Fisher’s Rest, meant as the promised tribute to Carrie Fisher. Check it out below!

You know this game looks awesome but I feel sort of lost in it as a new player. I guess I should just stick it out some more until I learn the systems a little better.

Finally! Some content I can get hyped for. I’ve been waiting for a beefy ED patch for a while. I sunk about 300 hours in before I just got so bored. So this is good.

Good work with the direct-linking!

I’ll care about it when you can get out of your ship and walk around.

I like the amount of options they give you in creating your character and the results look really good. I also like that you can alter your character at will as opposed to having to buy a character remake kit like most MMOs want to sell you.
You could start with a young character and age him or her over their piloting life, add a scar here or there from memorial battles etc, pretty nifty tbh.

The new camera tools look great as well, can definitely see people using them for 3rd person view, even if they are gimped.

I believe the British accent has caught you out Bree, the mega ship is Fisher’s Rest (after Carrie Fisher).

(Carrie) Fisher’s Rest makes more sense in that context but given they were talking about dolphins just before that bit I can see where the confusion may have come from :-)

This looks kind of cool and I like the various options but how is this intended to be used within the game. I mean is there a reason to create a holo-me (other than multi-crew maybe?) or will it be like EvE Online where you create your avatar and never make use of it.
(sorry I haven’t been following E:D that closely lately so not that up to date on all the developments)

From what I saw on the stream I liked the improved camera suite and if I get some time to revisit E:D I imagine I will be making use of that for some swanky screenshots. The megaship looks really cool too and will be interested in seeing how they are used in the game.

In anycase new things are always nice.

Others probably know more than me, I only play the game, I don’t hang on every patch note. As far as I can tell it will really only be for multi-crew and cool pics, plus giving (me anyway) a little more reason to care about the character.

Rumor has it, and I believe it is only a rumor, that maybe someday…MAYBE they will give the avatars the ability to at least get out of the pilots seat.

Overall I’m going to enjoy the new additions.

So for folks who have not intention of multi-crew then it is just something to fiddle with and forget. hmm well I guess I will just have to see what if anything they do in the future I guess.

This was my first question. I didn’t know EVE had avatar play.

EvE has a captain’s office thing in stations where you can walk around but it doesn’t really serve any actual purpose within the live game. I understand they had further plans for it but as it stands today it is just wasted effort.

My worry is that is what will happen here we get something that looks nice, can be pointed at in an “hey you can create a character” but it is never used in any meaningful way beyond that.

Eve Players clamored for years to be able to walk around in stations in an avatar, then when they actually started to create the system, we screamed bloody murder that the devs were wasting valuable development time. Hence all we have is the Captains Quarters. We are a fickle lot at times.

At least you can adjust and modify your avatar at any time that you are docked up, for free (I’m looking at you ESO).

Looks great! And this will go a long way in getting people into the game… it’s hard to relate to just a spaceship.
