You’re going to have to work to upgrade gear in Revelation Online

Getting gear in Revelation Online will come fairly easy and naturally as part of the questing and leveling process. Now, as for getting the most out of that gear by upgrading each piece? That’s going to take some serious work.

NetEase posted a guide today about Revelation Online’s marks system, which is used to add specialized stats to your gear. Marks are relatively tough to come by, obtainable only through world boss kills, the PvP shop, or the Demonslayer shop. Gear has a set number of sockets for marks, although more sockets can be added by purchasing them through the Curious shop. Lots of shops in this game, aren’t there?

“You can improve your damage and reach new heights by acquiring mana wrench, spell resistance, break essence and defence essence as extra attributes and also by acquiring these you can obtain a better gear score which will change the better the marks you equip,” NetEase explained.

So anytime I see a confusing system such as this it sparks two possiblilities in my mind to their motives behind their gear progression model, and neither are good. The only reasons I can see to do gear progression in this way (instead of just having better gear or tokens used to buy better gear drop directly from bosses) is to either artificially extend a small amount of content to take a lot longer than it should to progress through or because there will be “convenience” items for sale that reduce the impact of rng of upgrading, or in all likelihood both. Either way, I’m done with crazy rng gear upgrade/enchantment systems. If I’m stuck with the same piece of gear that is upgraded constantly instead of replaced with something better then count me out. I’ve played these systems too many times before to know that I don’t find them enjoyable.

Work is perhaps a poor choice of words when there’s p2w speculation. Or perhaps it’s the correct word, time will tell.

I keep telling people that this game isn’t it. I’m not even interested in a MMORPG unless it’s in VR. Atleast that part would be different. This is just a P2W repackage job of the sae asion MMORPGs we’ve been playing for years.

err… LOL!

Ok. So, sure. The door to the p2w speculation chamber just opened up a bit more and considering this is a My.com game, well harpoons are at the ready.

But to be fair, it all depends on what is offered at these shops and how the currency is obtained. It might be alright, right?

One thing though, from my own personal experience, multiple currencies and complex shop systems serve only to confuse and diffuse the actual real money spent. So in my best Captain Ahab, “There she blows”!

Except the only thing you can buy from the cash shop is the slots for the upgrades. The upgrades or “marks” are only obtainable through the assortment of in game activities depending on the marks you’re after.

Can you get the extra slots for the upgrade anywhere else? Cause if not, that’s still pay to win my dude whether you have to get the actual gem for socketing as a drop or not.

Since no one wants to read the actual post on my.com (which is the reference the article is based on), the item you can get via cash shop is also available via an in game drop that was pretty common, and rewarded for random things in the beta.

And may it ever remain so.
