The Daily Grind: Are there MMO characters you don’t want to play but wouldn’t delete?

My primary servers on World of Warcraft are easy to spot, because they both have a dozen characters on them. Then there are a few other servers with single characters left there. These are characters I haven’t played in years, characters I no longer wish to play, but ones I keep around just because. Some of them just look really unexpectedly nice, some of them have the advantage of familiarity, and one of them is an Orc Warrior named Grignr.

If you don’t understand why that’s important, a bit of searching will explain.

Anyhow, none of these characters factor into my playing or overall plans; they’re just characters I can’t bring myself to discard. So what about you, dear readers? Are there MMO characters you don’t want to play but also can’t bring yourself to delete? The sort that will forever sit there, unneeded for play, but making you happy by their mere continued existence in some small way?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’ve never deleted any characters in games that I have stopped playing, on the minute off-chance that I will want to return to the game at some point.

Too many…
Capped limit around year ago.
Really old characters I don’t touch and by old I mean thoose that have stuff like arrows or flint and tinder.
Only delete one when i really have to (new races/class). Only fresh low lvl.
That remind me there are two more races.
.. argh…

I dislike playing a hunter in WoW (I found them clunky admittedly it’s been a while so they might be better now) but I have a hunter I refuse to delete because it still has arrows from before they removed ammunition.

I don’t kill my family members that serve little purpose in the future. Put a lot of thought into these characters.

How about my Creature Handler in SWG (pour one out for the lost ones), who I couldn’t even LOG INTO post-NGE because then she wouldn’t be a Creature Handler any longer. That would have been, to me, even harsher than deleting her. She’s deleted now, but not by my hand.

There were some characters in City of Heroes (pour another out for the lost ones) that didn’t get played anymore because the friends I was playing them with were no longer in the game. But those characters were made to be played with those friends, and they were kept as mementos, I suppose. And, again, they’re deleted now, but again, not by my hand.

Come to think of it, along the same line as my CoH characters, there have been a few over the years in other (and these are still active!) games that had characters ‘put into storage’ because the person/people they ‘belonged with’ were no longer there. I don’t have any ‘memento characters’ in games I’m currently active in right now, but it will likely happen again, under these same circumstances.

Sure, but only in the regard of looking at possibly playing some games with friends. Since generally the MMOs aren’t really interesting me without them right now, I tend not to want to play without that.

Hmm. Well, sure there are. Some pretty extreme cases, I suppose.

Take SWTOR example for example. I have 22 toons. Yup. That’s right, 22. 2 for each class, a light side and a dark side. I wouldn’t and won’t delete even one. Lol. And I’m not even actively playing that game anymore.

In other games, I don’t hoard toons quite as much. But if there are various unique things about a class dependent on story or other aspects of character development, yup. Sign me up to have such toons even if I don’t play them much.

I like building concept builds in Star Trek Online. I don’t play them often but I just love getting the right ship and costumes and crew for them.

The only game where I’ve had characters, but I didn’t actually want to play on them was probably City of Heroes, and usually because I had such an inspired concept for the character that I wanted to reserve the name, but never got around to actually filling it out further.

Probably selfish of me as someone else could have actually lived as that hero… but that’s the curse of MMOs, to truly live them you have to do the entire grind again, so it’s much easier to think of “Mains” instead.

Yeah…

My SWTOR Mercenary comes to mind. I do not even remember when I created the character. I had BH playthrough already and I am not interested in another one, but character has been there almost since launch I think. He stays.
