The Daily Grind: What’s the purpose of vanity pets in MMOs?

I like pets. I just do. I have a couple in real life and even more in fake life (i.e., MMORPGs). If a game allows me the option to pull out some fuzzy, weird, or otherwise adorable pet as a traveling companion, I totally do. And I know that some of you do too.

But what’s the purpose of these critters? After all, they (usually) don’t confer any stat bonuses or assist in combat, even if you’re on your last hit point while your dog is too enraptured by a squirrel to pull you to safety. So why do we like to collect and equip them in MMOs? Is it the sense of companionship? A way to show off personal flair? An aid to roleplaying? Or something else entirely?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
