The Daily Grind: Which MMORPG that you love is terrible for new players?

Get started!

All MMORPGs are kind of garbage at onboarding new players. There are a lot of reasons for that, and a lot of games are genuinely trying their hardest to put the best foot forward, show you the cool things that they have working under the hood, and help ease you into what will be a very rewarding experience later. But that doesn’t mean it’s not kind of lousy to start a new character with one or two buttons to hit and then be told to kill wolves or street thugs or mutant cyber wolves or whatever right out of the gate. (And the inverse, of trying to start you inexplicably being super-awesome fighting amazing stuff, has the same dang problem.)

I found myself having a very easy time getting back into City of Heroes with only a slight lift when the game got an official return, but I also know the game very well. A totally new player is going to kind of have a nightmarish time, and the game’s tutorials are not great for new players. And that’s not counting games that have years of story or system cruft or other things to unpack, or games where you log in and see people with basic customization options you won’t get until you reach the higher levels. So which MMORPG do you love that is kind of terrible for someone new starting the game, however good it gets?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
