I was so excited when Star Wars: The Old Republic was coming out. I had plans for my characters of all eight classes. I had roleplaying plans with my wife. I couldn’t wait to see all of the content in the game, to play it to death, to level up and explore and really enjoy everything that the game had to offer. It was going to be my new home, I just knew it.
Here I am in 2022 and I haven’t played the game since… gosh, at least 2016, I think. I have honestly lost track; it has been a long while. It is just no longer in my wheelhouse at all.
Predicting something to be your new home forever is, of course, always a risky proposition. You never know what’s going to turn out to be good or bad, you don’t know what ongoing support will look like, and it’s impossible to be sure that the developer vision for a game you’re enjoying today is going to match the game you want to play in a couple of years. That’s just normal. Still, have you ever expected an MMO to be your home… and then it launched and you found it just wasn’t? The game in your head didn’t match the game you actually got?
