Elite Dangerous’ The Commanders update today adds player avatars

Call it “Sitting in Cockpits.”

No longer will your in-game representation in Elite Dangerous be a mere hunk of space metal with a flaking coat of paint. With Horizons Update 2.3: The Commanders today, all players will be able to create their own avatars to counter the loneliness of space exploration with a humanizing touch.

The avatar will be used extensively in the game, as players will be able to see their creation in the cockpit and have their likeness show up on-screen when chatting with others. If that’s not enough to make you feel chummy, then hook yourself up with one of the new multi-crew ships that allow several friends to join you in your adventures.

Other patch changes include ship names, ID plates, vanity cameras, and asteroid bases. Frontier CEO David Braben fielded a lot of questions about the update and the future of Elite Dangerous in a recent Reddit AMA, just in case you wanted to glean more information. For the rest of us, check out the commander creator feature after the jump!

Well, I did a bit on the beta for a while and really enjoyed a bit of multicrew with my friends.

There’s a bit of salt about the rewards for multi crewing but overall quite happy with it.

Looks like I need cram Elite back into my precious gaming time even if it’s just to check the avatar feature (that empty cockpit always creeped me out in Elite).

Heading to Sag A* myself for the first time. Been to the edges and the Formidine Rift more than once, but I’ve never gone inward. At least I’ll have zero worries about scoopable stars.

iirc scooping was never a problem on that route, except a small band of mostly brown dwarfs between the arms.
There’s a few nebula on the way that aren’t too much of a detour too.

First I thought this is an April Fool’s joke. Another typical half a$$ed Frontier feature that adds absolutely nothing except sitting mannequins? Congratulations to this anemic game with the oh so quickly development. 3 years after release (!) and all they have is sitting mannequins and half a dozen console ports.

Btw “Sitting in Cockpits” was a feature almost 4 years ago in the Alpha. I’m taking a wild guess, the “getting up from a chair update” will cost another £50 in 2019*

Man, that is some deep-rooted bitterness there. You should see someone about it before it destroys you. :(

Damn.

Man, Elite is a great value in the sea of MMORPGs.

$60 buy in, or $30 if you don’t want Horizons just yet. Every year they’ll ask another box. Honestly, hour-to-dollar Elite has made me comfortable in spending on visuals. $5 transactions encourage me.

So the patch is now live to download for PC users (Xbox folks have been able to predownload it for a few hours now).

My current estimate for download is bouncing from 10 minutes to 12 hours so its fair to say the servers is being hammered at the moment lol.

Gonna get the Explorer nametag pack. You?

Reader
BalsBigBrother

There is a unconfirmed rumour that all of them may be on my account along with a new ship AI voice for voice attack due to a rash moment of weakness while the servers were down. I reiterate this is totally unconfirmed at this point (and will remain so assuming I can hide the credit card bill :p )

All this without running a space game telethon/telecult.

For just $1000, you can have the Hellcat Volcano Guillotine Class Fighter, and THOU WILL BE HEALED!

My comedic heroes are all almost dust in the wind, certainly exposes mortality.

Robin being gone still hurts.

Adam West was my “carrot” when I was a young kid. “Do the dishes and you can watch Batman!” On Nick-at-Night.

I will forever remember the joker episode that ends with the witty casualness: “Breathe, Batman! Respirate, Robin!” Because they were… dum dum dum… suffocating.

I should find that episode for context. Though it may ruin it in the end.

I know this is controversial, but I fully support the ‘s being added to singular possessive words that end in s.

Reader
Cypher

You can actually use either form, but yes most people (over here at least) wouldn’t add the extra ‘s’, at least in official comms anyway.

Crow
Reader
Crow

That causes such a linguistic… faux-pau. The syllable length and inflection gets killed when you add even more “s” sounds to the written version. The “s” doesn’t appear in “ships'” because it is a silent vocalization.

Basically, when you already have the “s” sound you don’t want to double-up on it because it screws with the base structure of words, themselves. The added “s” in plural form is unnecessary and causes undue confusion to a reader who inserts more “s” sounds than necessary.

It isn’t “SHIPS-eSSSSSSS” but “Ships”. When you add an extra “s” as conjoined by a possessive you elongate a word’s actual pronunciation into a thing no one would ever actually say.

Reader
TheDonDude

“Ships” would be plural, though, and thus just a ‘ is appropriate.

If we’re talking about Chris’s arm, we would indeed say Chris-ess arm. Chris is singular, as is Elite Dangerous.

Crow
Reader
Crow

The sounds get “flattened” into a singular sound. The break is the issue. “Chris… ‘s” isn’t even an “s” sound but three other vowels all mushed together.

The “‘s” denotes an extra beat in syllabic meter, but it isn’t more than a pause-beat for the rest of it.

Reader
TheDonDude

Chris’s has more of a beat than, say, Bob’s.

Crow
Reader
Crow

And in linguistics that extra beat is nonsense.

Reader
TheDonDude

Alas, I feel linguistics must follow behavior rather than the other way around.

Crow

I feel linguistics must follow behavior rather than the other way around.

I have no issue with common use and vernacular. But by definition, Linguistics isn’t about how people talk day-to-day. It is as about showing people (practically) that their constructions cause more confusion that they avoid.

Looking forward to this update for new camera suite, the megaships and some of the tweaks that are coming to certain ships. Not so much the multicrew or the character creator but I imagine I may take a look at the creator at least. Still its all nice for those folks that like that sort of thing

Crow

The new camera is, maybe, my most exited bit for this update!

Think about the One Shots!

Crow

So with multicrew incoming I wouldn’t mind making a few friends in-game. While I’m a Mostly Harmless Explorer, there’s always a second seat on my AspX. CMDR CrowingOne.

Also, Name Plates are now in the store! W00T!

If we get to the point where we can crew together/travel together/away mission, I am down.

Those faces don’t look tired at all.

Reader
BalsBigBrother

Still they look better than the new ones from Secret World: Legends. O.o shots they have been fired hehe :p

Reader
Melissa McDonald

Yeah all the new Secret world game added was a few new faces/textures. They are still the same play-dough avatars.

Reader

Nice looking, 2017-age avatars. Once again, Elite leaps past Star Citizen… Well done! Now… Let us get out of our spaceships and walk around in those avatars on planets and bases, and very importantly, other people’s spaceships… and you’ve got a sale from me!

Reader
Armsman

Once again, Elite leaps past Star Citizen…

^^^
Yeah, No. When said player Avatar can actually walk around inside; or walk out of the ship, give me a call.

Reader
Drainage

Oh come on, walk around and do what exactly? LOL

Crow
Reader

Last time my avatar walked around in Star Citizen it bugged out rendering me on the outside of the station with seemingly unlimited oxygen.

Reader
NovaScotiaCitizen

“Once again Elite leaps past Star CIitzen? ”

hahahah sorry but are you on crack? “Once again?” Elite can’t even leap past Kerbal Space Program. And by the way Elite’s sitting mannequin is less than Star Citizen showed in the Kickstarter video. JUST SAYIN..

You have no damn clue how much effort your “now let’s walk around on planets and bases” nonsense request would be. Just because they just delivered measly 3% (sitting mannequins, yeah!) now let’s quickly patch in the missing 97%, a million animations for walking around and actually doing something. Not happening , Miss Armchair Developer.

Reader
BalsBigBrother

@NoveScotiaCitizen Going to have a gentleman’s bet with you for bragging rights that Elite:Dangerous gets its legs or a walking feature (be that ship based or planet) before the multiplayer aspect of Star Citizen even launches as a live product (non alpha / beta or early access product.)

Crow
Reader
Crow

That’s shitty. Braben actually has been making games for decades, and it shows. Roberts, who took a decade+ off to try to be a Hollywood producer makes way more sense.

Reader
Melissa McDonald

So obviously courtesy is unknown in Nova Scotia. Not wasting another brain cell on the likes of you.

My current list is Elite > MFSX > Oolite > everything else.

Crow
Reader

This doesn’t taint my view of the game going forward, but the last free-fly weekend for Star Citizen I logged in and immediately glitched outside of the station with no way back inside.

Like, I’ll stick to Elite thankyouverymuch. I think the worst technical issue there has been being dropped from server a handful of times.

I will say that the base Elite gives hundreds of crazy good hours (for spaceship/space people) before even thinking about the season pass for Horizons.

Crow

Crow

I’m super excited for this update. Actually went and pulled the trigger on Horizons yesterday.

Mostly, for me, I’m super-stoked for the Exploration buff. That said, since yesterday’s mission tweak the long-range (10k+ Ly) missions seem to be gone. I really hope this corrects that issue and I can find a good, 60mil payee 20-30k Ly passenger. I didn’t try too hard last night, but the “sightseeing” tours topping off at about 10mil were the best I found in a few swaps between solo/open.

I mean, whatever. I don’t need more than a sense of wonder to go out to the galactic edge and poke about. That said, those missions are super motivating for explorers.

Along with Horizons I got myself a paint job pack for my Asp since I can’t imagine not flying it as my primary… ever.

resembles the alien fighters in “Independence Day”

Crow

I find the ID alien ships to be far more like Imperial aesthetics… They’re way too curvy and smooth.

I’m often surprised Fed-corp ships aren’t just big boxes. That’s the aesthetic (and I love it the same way I love that the Martian Navy in Expanse-verse are basically in “space skyscrapers” because that actually makes the most sense from a practical POV).

like the ones in Firefly? ;)

Crow

Sort of. Without friction and without a focus on getting crafts out of the atmosphere, the real mass-to-accel comes from building a light craft that works, surprisingly, like how one would engineer a building for mass g-forces: a la an earthquake, which will pale in comparison to the stresses placed on properly engineered plates.

The big issue is not making your craft break in two when engaging in tight turns. In Elite this is repped by a simple max turn radius.
