The Daily Grind: When is an MMORPG rare drop too rare?

The new Anima Weapon quests have me started on that process over in Final Fantasy XIV. It’s a slow process toward the high end, and frankly that’s fine with me – it’s all based on time rather than upon lucky drops. But the initial portion is a bit luck-based, yet initial testing shows a low but reasonable drop rate on the rare items in question. (About 20-25%, it seems, based on unscientific testing.)

That got me thinking about rare drops in general. Rare mounts and pets, rare crafting materials, rare anything. We all know that rare means, well, rare, but how rare is too rare in an MMORPG? Is a 5% drop rate too rare? What if it’s something you can try for every five minutes? Once per day? When is something moving beyond just being rare and into the realm of being annoying?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

There was also that quest in WotLK on WoW where you had to go through a certain heroic trying for some rare sword drop that was part of a quest to collect 100 souls or something..which upgrades it into one of them thar fancy swords…and I went through a ton of times because I was a Titangrip warrior and wanted to get at least one, if not two…and I saw it drop 4 times, and every single damn time…the DKs in the party would roll on it and I lost every single roll. I was a bit pissed off since that was the only reason I went through that place so many times.

SallyBowls1 Should all players that have a chance of obtaining an item be guaranteed eventually get their trophy? I understand how that might be useful with quest or powerful equipment but would it still apply to rare cosmetic items?

I think it depends on the amount of challenge behind it – having to complete a difficult raid to get an item that only has a 1% drop rate would absolutely suck. Absent minded grinding large numbers of rats for that wouldn’t be too bad at all

It’s too rare when it annoys me to try and get it.

This varies based on mood. Some days what would’ve bothered me another day simply doesn’t..and I can try try away.

(I actually earned x2 of the ‘rare’ Halloween painted skeleton mount on LOTRO on 2 of my x15 toons over there….when I tried with all of them every day/time we were able to. Sadly the event expired before I could get another. Now I often don’t bother trying for rares unless I really really want something in a game…)

Drop rates related to static items dropping from static mobs/bosses with static stats and static looks, I could not care less about.
When getting the exact same “Sword of Uniqueness” that everyone on your server has becomes a goal in the game I am usually already gone.
The connotation of “rare” and “random” no longer mean what they did 12 years ago in this genre when you are now expected to get to max level in days vs years (if ever).

Rare items drop is hard one to pindown. Sometimes its in so the playerbase will rerun dungons and raids with or without lockouts which is fine. But sometime I find it cruel how low droprates are. I got realy burned in warcraft,  because I thrown away so much gear. That I got a dislike when they added transmoge in the game. Then you have epic rare mounts and stuff which so cruel.

Rare is rarely rare enough, for me.

Just my 2 cents but I don’t think 20-25% drop rate is considered rare. When you have farmed things with .03% drop rate we can talk again.
