The Daily Grind: When is an MMORPG rare drop too rare?

To be fair, some enemies would fear a hatchet.

The new Anima Weapon quests have me started on that process over in Final Fantasy XIV. It’s a slow process toward the high end, and frankly that’s fine with me – it’s all based on time rather than upon lucky drops. But the initial portion is a bit luck-based, yet initial testing shows a low but reasonable drop rate on the rare items in question. (About 20-25%, it seems, based on unscientific testing.)

That got me thinking about rare drops in general. Rare mounts and pets, rare crafting materials, rare anything. We all know that rare means, well, rare, but how rare is too rare in an MMORPG? Is a 5% drop rate too rare? What if it’s something you can try for every five minutes? Once per day? When is something moving beyond just being rare and into the realm of being annoying?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
