I am not going to lie to you, dear readers: This is a question to which I have a really easy answer. I’ve been writing about MMOs professionally since 2009, meaning that a genre I very nearly didn’t get into at all has been responsible for my entire adult career. It’s not hard for me to say how MMOs have affected my real life; my real life is a living testament to it.
But if you’ve been reading my writing for a while, you probably recall one of my anecdotes about rekindling my friendship and eventual romance with my wife via World of Warcraft. I’ve learned things about my personal tastes and about how game design works. Heck, I made an internet connection a priority in many places largely because of online games. You can’t spend hours of your life on one thing without it having some sort of effect.
But what about you? Maybe you’ve met a romantic partner or a lifelong friend, maybe you’ve found a job, or maybe you’ve just learned more about how to look at the world through your time in the game. What’s the biggest way MMOs have affected your real life?
