The Daily Grind: Do you care about MMO lore?

Sometimes despite its best efforts.

Lore is a big deal to me when I’m playing an MMO. For all the issues I have with Guild Wars 2, it genuinely paints a comprehensive picture of the game world and the way societies work within it. Games like The Secret World and Star Trek Online are positively dripping with richness in their settings. Everyone’s heard me ramble on endlessly about how much I love the lore behind Final Fantasy XIV. A game with lore that I find particularly weak or uninteresting, by contrast, has a harder time roping me in; if I don’t care about the world, I find it hard to care about the game.

But that doesn’t necessarily matter to everyone. I don’t feel like TERA does a particularly good job with its lore, but obviously there are a lot of people who either disagree or just plain don’t care about that. I know there are other people in Final Fantasy XIV who really don’t care about the game’s lore in the least. So today, I ask you, dear readers: Do you care about MMO lore? Does that influence your fondness for a game? Or is it pretty much irrelevant to your enjoyment or lack thereof?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
