The Daily Grind: What makes for a great MMO expansion?

Here we go again.

Pulling off a great MMO expansion has to be a tricky thing. Sure, there’s the knee-jerk response of, “Just throw in everything awesome!” But what does that entail, exactly? And how careful do developers need to be in adding to the game that they don’t break or ruin what has made the MMO special to this point?

A good expansion, in my opinion, should add a lot more of what players have enjoyed and been doing in the game to that point. It should be sizable (not expansion “in name only”), contain at least one huge new feature (such as a class, race, or system), and be polished and tested from top to bottom.

So what makes for a great MMO expansion in your book? Which x-packs are great examples of your list?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
