The Daily Grind: Have you ever lost touch with an MMO friend when you wish you hadn’t?

There are places I remember

I do not move between games with a full entourage. I have one person who comes with me from game to game, maybe two, and the most likely person to come along is my wife. This means that there are many people I have met over the years from Final Fantasy XI onward whom I have just lost touch with. There are friends I made in Guild Wars who I no longer speak with, people I knew in World of Warcraft who have drifted away, even some people who have subsequently left Final Fantasy XIV and whom I just… don’t talk with any longer.

And yes, some of these people are folks I miss. It’s not exactly surprising that we’ve lost touch, but at the same time, these were cool folks and I hope they’re doing all right. Of course, there are also people I’ve lost touch with whom I probably wouldn’t really care much about even if I could find them again, so everything is variable. What about you, readers? Have you ever lost touch with an MMO friend when you wish you hadn’t?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I can think of three, actually. The one I miss the most was my WoW guild leader though. So many adventures. I wasn’t into social media at the time so I never bothered to establish any sort of contact outside the game. Then I quit. When I went back she was gone. This same thing happened in FFXI and FFXIV. I need to stop quitting my MMOs….

Or you could start up a Twitter account to give guildies you like a point of contact. You don’t need to use it for anything else — only as a place where people can find you (and vice versa) if you move on from a game.

You don’t need to be alone any more, sir! :-) Heh.

But seriously, I hope this sorts for you. Be well.

Cheers,

I lost touch with a few when CoH closed, ones that I hadn’t got around to getting contact info for outside of the game. I was lucky enough to have other means of contacting several or even had the chance to find a few others in games afterward based on them using the same globals.

Lost contact with a few people from CO too. If The Gentleman from Dimensional Radio is out there, contact me you git.

I miss many from my old EverQuest server, EMarr, particularly (but not only from) my guild, Affliction (I miss you, you Affholes!). I miss friends from DAoC and SWG. Most of my friends from the days of EQ2 onwards I’ve been able to at least somewhat keep in touch with, it’s just those from the early days where we spent day after day together that even now if I have contact information, things never seem to go right. I do have some wonderful memories, though. :)

A few, now that I think back on it.

One was a guy I met in Guild Wars 1 – he was playing during the winter break before he started law school, and was kind enough to help push me through some of the harder quests in Factions. I jump on GW1 every now and again, but he hasn’t logged on since.

There was also a random person I met on Monster Hunter Tri. Not a MMO by definition, but it was an online game played with strangers. He was the only person I found that meshed well with my playstyle, and the two of us accomplished what teams of four could not.

To this day, I hope I’ll bump into them again. And if the rest of this comment section is any evidence, I’m sure everyone else feels the same way about their personal interactions as well.

Kinda spooky, really…this comment section makes me feel like I’m walking through an electronic graveyard of some sort.

There have been few. Lost track of a couple of people when I first started MMO’s , Asheron Call. Then lost track of a great group while playing Warhammer Online.

One major one. I made a lot of friends in FFXI, and thanks to social media I was able to catch up with them even after they left the game, but the best friend I made there, or probably in any game, I sadly lost touch with. I stopped playing the game years ago when my automatic renewal wasnt working, and it was making me pay a reactivation fee on top of my sub every month, so I stopped playing it, it was around then that my friend Arikiba also got a new job or something I think, so it was hard to catch up with her on chat programs too. I think she got tired of playing when myself and our other friends had all stopped, so she left too.

She liked to roleplay, so her email was a roleplay one, and I think after leaving the game she grew out of it, and likely made a new email. I would occasionally email her and would hear back from her months later when she checked it, but it seems she hasnt in a long time, and she doesnt use facebook anymore either. I really miss hanging out with her, in a game where I was possibly a little bit of an overachiever she taught me how to just have fun with a game by exploring, being silly, and playing the way you want. MMOs just arent the same without her around ): If she ever somehow reads this I hope to hear from her.

Once. A good guy I met in WoW, for the toxic atmosphere of a server I played with he was surprisingly sane and accomplished person.

These days if I befriend a person in game we connect over some social network (my Facebook page appeared as means to keep in touch with my guild members in the first place). No more lost connections. *nod*nod*

Yes. A special few. I have also kept in touch with some over 10 years.

Two people.

Desta from Cerberus on FFXI, it’s me Mateo. I miss you and hope you’re doing better.

The other is Alyyra from WoW when you played with me and Cristomos, if you ever see this, it’s me Khalith/Khayleth.

I miss a lot of people I used to play with, but especially CrymsonRain from Dark Ages. If you happen to see this, it’s Yoake. I miss you.
