The Daily Grind: What’s the most awkward moment you’ve ever stumbled into in an MMO?

Remember, Estinien is dumb.

Sometimes I feel disappointed that despite 16 years spent playing MMOs, I have never once stumbled into public ERP. Despite the reputations of places like Goldshire in World of Warcraft and The Quicksands in Final Fantasy XIV – and despite playing on roleplaying hubs – it just has never happened. A potentially legendary awkward occurrence forever avoided by people having the basic levels of intelligence necessary to keep things in private channels, truly heartbreaking.

Of course, I have managed to queue into random groups in which a couple is loudly arguing in party chat, seen enormous community meltdowns from just far enough outside of the circle to know everyone involved without being personally involved, and at one point got cold-invited into a guild with an explicit white supremacist name. That was awkward. So what’s the most awkward moment you’ve ever stumbled into in an MMO? And considering how this stuff can linger, did it affect your opinion of the game as a whole?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Running around leveling up my Alchemy in Alterac Mountain, ran past the farm that’s on the shore of Lordamere Lake. Heard an odd message in local chat, went inside the homestead and there was two Worgen and a Draenei in the bedroom ERPing.

They were real shocked to see me. Being the s**tlord that i am, i immediately set about killing the vibe by incessantly questioning what they were upto and jumping around on the bed they were lying on.

The Ferengi-owned Drozana station player hub used to be an unofficial erp (erotic role-play) hub in Star Trek Online for a while.

Eventually, Cryptic folks stepped in and dropped the hammer on it all, cleaning up the place using Terms of Service violations because, y’know, some people don’t have enough sense or modesty to keep their naughty talk confined to private chat.

Talking about what your bits would like to do to someone else’s bits in open chat is a big no-no, not to mention incredibly tacky.

I avoided Drozana during this time, only stopping in when I needed to follow up on an instanced mission at the location.

I only ever overheard little bits, and nothing terribly scandalous ever, while travelling through, but one thing I noticed — as with all things “porn”, it was all so very cringe-y and fake, no matter how “sexy” or “provocative” people wanted to sound.

You missed nothing of interest, Eliot, trust me. :-)

Was this girl on a raid who had to go afk, and forgot to turn off teamspeak.
Her boyfriend (I assume) came and there was a loud argumemt about whether he had been kissing someone else at a party, and then it turned really immature; doors were slamming.
Awkward….

I’ve only stumbled upon public ERP once in my entire gaming history of 20+ years and that was on GW2 while I was out chasing down zone achievements on my 2nd character. It was a couple, one RPing a vampire and… well. I decided to let them know someone else was around. xD

But the award for most awkward is I had a friend in BDO who whenever the topic of ERP was brought up, loudly and proudly stated they didn’t do that. One night in guild chat, a guildie accidentally posted into chat about banging on… guess who? The very person who claimed they don’t ERP. The entire guild was laughing and I’m sure every one of us got a screenshot.

I was playing Priston Tale, years ago, and i was crossing the desert.

When i crossed the zone entrance, i was immediately “greeted” by a Fighter who i thought was afk.

When i go about my way, he then screams in capslock:

“CRAAAAAWLING IN MY SKIIIIIN”

“THESE WOOOOOUNDS WILL NOT HEAAAAAAL”

If this qualifies, I’m probably on a lot of people’s awkward lists

Hmm… I’ve been through my share of weird and awkward moments. I play both male and female toons. My females tend to be great fighters and even leaders as I like tanking. So, there have been a few instances after a group situation that resulted in some interesting whispers from the young and the restless. When I told them I was a dude, it always got weird. Some got mad, some slinked away while I chuckled to myself.

BUT I have a bad story too. I played SWTOR for a number of years, and at the beginning I met a group of people who became a really good circle of friends. We started a guild, and had several years of good fun. We even witnessed IRL marriage as a couple in our little click tied the knot during that time.

But I guess it was not meant to be, as we also witnessed the couple’s relationship deteriorate before our very eyes. It was a slow burn, but I guess marriage brought them both the realization that they didn’t want to be married. And instead of talking things through, they came back to the guild and talked about each other behind their respective backs.

And after a while, it started to get really bad… No longer would they contain their arguments offline. And there were several moments that we had to wonder what was going on away from the game as they logged off at war with each other.

Finally, divorce papers were served, but that only made things even worse in the guild. They wanted people to pick sides. And everyday the subtext was the divorce, seemingly.

I was the GM, and I spoke to them both several times to contain the drama and keep it out of the guild. But, it didn’t work. There was to much emotion involved. And a lot of resentment. Too make a long story short, I finally removed them both from the guild until the divorce was over. Heh. That did not go over will either.

So, yeah that was awkward as fuck. And it was also distressing and sad. They were great friends of mine, and now we don’t even talk.

So i’m running around in Tatooine and i’m exploring these uncle Owenesque houses, i go into one house and, there’s a couple standing on a bed in their underwear, sometimes the game takes a few seconds to load up players gear, so i was there waiting for their gear to load, until i realised what was happening and darted the hell out of there, i’m pretty sure the couple are somewhere writing about this guy who busted into their Tatooine love nest and stood there watching for a couple of minutes…

Walking in on ERP is awkward? I just move on and keep playing the game. None of my business.

I can remember going into the Star Wars cantina on Nar Shadaar for a quest in SWTOR one time several months back and there was a couple roleplaying a rather intimate moment in “say”… that was AWKWARD and more than bit funny while trying to listen to the dialogue while their ERP’ing was scrolling through my chat box in the corner of my eye.

I tend to play late my time so I guess they figured there wouldn’t/wasn’t many about though to be fair I don’t think they even noticed I WAS there, they were in the moment typing away lol

As for how it affected me, I didn’t it was amusing, and awkward nothing else, it was what it was..
