The Daily Grind: What’s the most awkward moment you’ve ever stumbled into in an MMO?

I've got a lot of problems with you people!

Sometimes I feel disappointed that despite 16 years spent playing MMOs, I have never once stumbled into public ERP. Despite the reputations of places like Goldshire in World of Warcraft and The Quicksands in Final Fantasy XIV – and despite playing on roleplaying hubs – it just has never happened. A potentially legendary awkward occurrence forever avoided by people having the basic levels of intelligence necessary to keep things in private channels, truly heartbreaking.

Of course, I have managed to queue into random groups in which a couple is loudly arguing in party chat, seen enormous community meltdowns from just far enough outside of the circle to know everyone involved without being personally involved, and at one point got cold-invited into a guild with an explicit white supremacist name. That was awkward. So what’s the most awkward moment you’ve ever stumbled into in an MMO? And considering how this stuff can linger, did it affect your opinion of the game as a whole?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
