The Daily Grind: How normal are you about your MMO characters?

Normal.

I like to joke to people who know me in-game that I am extremely normal about my character in Final Fantasy XIV. But there are some people who make my jokes about being extremely normal ring hollow, because they are so very normal that I actually look totally normal. Like, “my Au Ra is the perfect lord among men, and if you change the location of even one of his precious scales, I will come down on you with the fury of a thousand suns.” And that’s not counting the people who treat the game’s characters like Second Life avatars with even less shame.

Oddly there’s an awful lot of overlap between this and people whose character designs started as awful, but now I’m just mirroring the FFXIV bad NSFW Reddit. (I’m not linking it. But it’s a horror show.)

To some people, all of this sounds weird. I know of people who just hit “random” at character creation and go with that, so “spending days deliberating over hairstyles” is already into the “exceedingly normal” region. Without sharing pictures, though, be honest about yourself. How normal are you about your MMO characters?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
