The Daily Grind: How much does the metagame influence your MMO picks?

your game might also be bad

A lot of people like to lie to themselves and say that the metagame in a given MMO does not influence any choices they make. This is not true. If you really want to play a character who has a gun and a game does not feature guns, and you decide you are not going to play the game because you want a gun? Well, the metagame just influenced that decision, didn’t it? That’s not to say that it’s somehow the wrong call (no, Lord of the Rings Online should probably not feature a yee-haw cowboy class toting twin six-shooters), but we are all influenced by meta concerns more often than we might admit.

Some games you might avoid because you know that magical damage or melee damage is overwhelmingly more important and that doesn’t mesh with how you want to play. Maybe you love the graphics of a game but dislike the class options or lack thereof. Maybe you just are personally annoyed that a sword and shield can’t be used tt o deal damage. Whatever the reason, how much does the metagame influence your MMO picks?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
