MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our award for the Best worst thing sold in an MMO this year. The Golden Yachties series is our run of fauxwards, named in honor of somebody we’ve long forgotten from Old Massively who insisted that surely we make so much money that we’re typing MMO blog posts from a gold-plated yacht. (Joke’s on you; it was always silver. Gold is too heavy.)
And the winner is…
SOTA’s $80 Lord British birthday axe
I wanted to make this award about the best pants in an MMO and give it to Guild Wars 2. I love these pants. FFXIV’s donut earring is also suitably cool and weird. But wisdom prevailed because this award is not really about the best. It’s the best worst. And really, the best worst item sold by an MMO this year has to be the new battle axe in Shroud of the Avatar, which was created explicitly for players who ponied up $80 for a pack of crowns, all in honor of a livestream celebrating Richard Garriott’s birthday. It’s 2024 and SOTA is still managing to sell weird stuff attached to Garriott, but at least it’s not hair or blood.
