The Daily Grind: Which MMOs are the most and least like their launched versions?

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the Ship of Theseus metaphor for online games — that of a product that has all of its parts replaced or upgraded at some point so that the current version could be called a completely new fabrication, even though it was built on the structure of the old. Yet what often gets missed from that conversation is the fact that in the metaphor, the new ship is an awful lot like the originally built one.

In this respect, MMOs aren’t quite like the Ship of Theseus because they grow, morph, and develop in ways that result in a product quite different than the launched edition. Today, I want to see if we can figure out which MMOs remained the truest to the feel and design of the launch version and which have evolved the most away from what they originally are.

So which MMOs are the most and least like their launch versions?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
