If there’s an underlying social engine that fuels competition in MMOs, perhaps it’s envy. We’re faced with the fact that — no matter what the game tells us — we’re not the sole golden one who’s saving the entire world. Instead, we see others with more powerful gear, better fashion, and more interesting abilities and are driven to attain what they have.

I’ll admit it: Sometimes I very much feel this way when I spot someone doing something fun or amazing with another class. That’s when “class envy” strikes, making me wonder if I am missing out and need to roll up a completely different profession.

Do you ever get hit by a dose of class envy? When’s the last time that happened, and what — if anything — did you do about it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
