MMORPGs are populated by a zoo’s worth of creatures as part of our eternal safari to seek out new life forms and then extinguish them for their livers and tails. Does this make us poachers for profit? Let’s ignore that ugly truth and move on, shall we?
Anyway, with the demand high for a large bestiary, developers have to keep churning out all manner of fantasy creatures (even in sci-fi MMOs) to keep our interest. Is it any surprise then that different studios go to the same well of mythical tropes for inspiration?
That’s probably OK, since there are always those creatures we love to see in MMOs. I’m always partial to kobolds, since I see them as the scrappy underdogs of the fantasy food chain. On the flip side, I get a strong eye twitch whenever I encounter yet another dragon cluttering up my game with its flying lizard nonsense.
