Sword and Bored: Poof! Poof! Poof! Poof!

It’s Monday again and time for the further adventures of Mo in Sword and Bored. I have been extremely impressed with the popularity of this little comic. Although I’ve been drawing forever and Jef has been writing forever, this is our first venture into the unknown world of web comics.

We are more than happy that you have related to Mo. He really does represent the every-man/woman MMO player. We’ve all at one time or another run into the same troubles that he has, but we stick with MMOs because they are fun, despite some of the other players that use us as their content.

I promise that things will get better for Mo, eventually. But for now, let’s see what this week has in store…

You know what? These things aren’t for everyone. But this is the first one I laughed at. Keep up the good work. People who like it will thank you.

I hope one day to be impressed by this comic as much as you are by its “popularity”.

NCsucks That’s the problem though. The effort to ‘balance’ all classes and builds pretty much ruins the game for me. I /want/ there to be concrete advantages and disadvantages to different classes. That, plus 2,3 and 4 are why I have no use for PvP games.

Kherova breetoplay Edany (AmberACurtis) The joke is that Mo has initially rolled on a PvP server – and the trope is that on a PvP server, all noobs are going to get repeatedly spawn camped and killed over and over by “psychopaths and sociopaths”  – leading to the re-creation of Mo on a PvE server (which is the experience for the majority of people who play only on PvE servers it seems).

I would have no problem with PVP if:

1)Classes/builds would be balanced.

2)I would not get backstabbed

3)More players would not team up on you.

Haha. This has been about how I’ve felt with PVP servers since I started working full time and being too busy to dedicate much time to them. PVE all the way now ;)

Damn, I would give an arm and a leg for a PVE server in Archeage.

thegirlwiththehair Modrain Siphaed  Won’t be happening in Life is Feudal.  Not only is there NO level system to abuse, but reputation at very low levels will cause issues with stats, and alts cost money.  Bandit groups will have to be VERY organized, and will limit themselves in how they attack enemies (the idea being that a knockout is a lot less of a reputation hit, thus less time to recover *still hours real life* AND less chance of hitting that permanent criminal marker where you become fair game to get murdered.)
Won’t be happening in several other upcoming open world pvp sandboxes, as they are using similar or other design systems to minimize pvp grief issues… while still letting wars and such happen.

I still think there should have been a stretch goal for NOT having this comic strip.

Archebius Kanbe  ROFL.  Got news for ya… there’s not much of anybody surprised at this anymore.  Unless, you know, you have a class that can force-disconnect people as their killing move.

My very first try in pvp back in early EQ was very much like MO’s. I’ve never gone into another pvp server/game since. I’m quite content with pve.

MewmewGirl  This is where games are going… sandboxes and other games with world pvp options are starting to find ways to make constant ganking so painful to the ganker that it no longer becomes worth doing.  In fact, some of them are taking such extreme measures as start reductions to where newbies eat their faces after about 4-5 murders in a row.  These games are also setting it up where it takes hours or days to recover from these stat drains in real life… and where the use of free alts is a no go for bypassing this (either account wide, or pay to alt systems.)
The game sounds like it was very cool to start with.  It is sad that so many people can find joy in tormenting others without any challenge involved.

now, thats just carelessness. the first mmo i played was the sort where you just got 1shot ganked literally constantly as a newbie, i stealthed my ass off and made out of those levels just fine!

This is the #1 reason why I will never play on a PVP server again. I did it for SWTOR, and it was just incredibly painful trying to do even simple dailies because there was always at least two guys roaming around purely to kill solo guys. Weren’t looking for fair fights or anything. Just wanted to gank.

I still like PVP, but I’ll get my fill with just arena type matches.

Ah, who wants to play on the Nudist Ninja server anyways?  (No worries, Mo, plenty of us prefer PvE.)  ;)

Sorry Mo but we can only hold them for so long here in juvie then we have to send them back out to the general public.  I would not go to the PvE server, that only supports the poor design by the developers.  I suggest you find another game altogether.

*Note – My Edit time has gone by with so that’s why I’m replying.  I just wanted to mention that the Dev did just say they’d try to change it so it isn’t a grief fest, they just posted now saying that after I re-wrote my review and impressions of the game elsewhere to say what it now turned into.  *If* they do change the game, I’d recommend trying it out for people interested in looking at something different.  It wasn’t really made for people who play constantly, so it’s not a replacement for any big game, it was meant for something extra to mostly do on a mobile device when you had a little bit of free time.

Although the idea is sound and someone *could* make a full game based on it’s premise that people could play all the time.  Anyway since they might fix what is happening, I did want to mention that, so I don’t get anybody to skip looking at the game because they heard it was all ganking of new players (which is it, but may not be soon *crosses fingers*).

Sad but true.

A new online game came out recently on iOS, Android, and Mac called “Wolf Online”.  While it wasn’t very deep yet, it was incredibly different.   You played a Wolf, one of three different packs, and at release it was co-op hunting in your home area with crazy amounts of role play (people role playing packs, male and female wolves together, etc) with a little bit of PvP at home when others invaded your starting area which was usually squished out fast.  There were lots of other maps that were shared for everybody that had full time PvP on them for people into that.  You can move to any map, people just didn’t usually move into others home maps often as everybody was the same level and you’d be killed quick if you went into another’s home area.

Anyway players hunted all sorts of animals with other wolves, including small ones that didn’t fight back and absolutely huge ones that did and were very strong.  As mentioned home areas turned into these great co-op role playing areas at first.  They had these giant bosses that could be anything from giant snakes to mythical creatures.  While that took it out of it’s element a little bit, they were still cool to gang up with other wolves against and take down.

I couldn’t play it for a week and went back.  Now the game has turned into a 100% gank fest.  The starting areas are filled with people who sat online playing all week gaining crazy amounts of stats and levels that now sit there ganking every new and lower level player that tries to hunt the NPC animals in their own starting area.  The role players and co-op people have mostly been driven away.  There is no more cool role play and co-op happening.  There was no tutorial area, this ganking is happening where you start.  There is no PvP restriction and it’s 100% ganking right now.  I guess “luckily” at least half the people ganking others are Korean and Russian so at least you can’t understand their laughing and taunting afterwards at least.

Unfortunately there is no PvE server, so unless the Devs decide to do something to protect home areas this is what the game is going to be from here on out until people just give up on it completely.  While it makes a nice comic, this is sadly also very true in most games that make it easy for griefers to do.

xGBHx Will you send us/me a message through Kickstarter from your account so I know who you are? I don’t have your Livefyre name on my list, but this could be for lots of reasons (we’re still missing over 200 surveys, some folks didn’t fill everything out, and some names just plum didn’t come over properly in the import because of odd characters).

Modrain thegirlwiththehair Siphaed I don’t think you can draw any conclusion about her opinion on PvP one way or another based on her asking two short questions.
In any case, most pure PvP games or minigames like MMORPG arenas will not immediately thrust newbies in to be fodder for top-ranked players, and few raise the stakes as high as many FFA games do (with looting or experience loss), so it’s not really the same thing at all.

Cyroselle
Guest
Cyroselle

Siphaed What’s a psychopathic sociopath? IMO it’s easier and far more accurate to just say ‘Jerk’.
And until the jerks are all rounded up by the jerk nazis, we’ll still have to deal with them somehow, but calling them things they’re not just overcomplicates matters. True, with the Hardcore raider type, or stick-up-butt RP type, there are just other kinds of jerks on the PVE servers, you can’t really get away from bad, antisocial behavior.
The S&M RPers on the other hand, they’re not so bad… and have some pretty creative Dimensions over on Rift, I can tell you! (damn, playing too much DIII lately, I’m starting to talk like Covetous Shen.)

I personally don’t want to waste my time being stressed out on pvp servers. I know, I know, don’t get emotionally invested. Sorry, can’t do it with my anxiety. (don’t point out the irony of me backing crowfall (I’m trying new things)).

SaloMaya I loved the pirate servers ’cause they let me craft EVERYTHING! I could get all the materials together and craft to my little hearts desire, all day if I wished! But yeah, they were messy, many of the quests didn’t work, and gank-trolling was off the hook, even more so than in the legit client.
