Sword and Bored: World clipping

This comic doesn’t need a long introduction: We’ve all experienced the annoyance of clipping in one form or another, but certain MMOs are infamous for making clipping and falling through the seams of a world a fate worse than death, with mechanics that actually work against the player trying to fix his buggy situation.

At any rate, I know that nearly everyone who is reading this comic has been where Mo finds himself. What’s your worst experience with this video game phenomenon?

@Oleg Chebeneev there are as many variations to world clipping as there are MMOs. Your limited experience is not gospel.

Early on in DAoC’s implementation of water combat for the classic servers, I was swimming around in RvR when I lost my internet. I log back in to find myself “falling” horizontally. It was half an hour before a GM arrived and I was moving so fast they couldn’t keep up long enough to keep me targetted. Eventually, they had to have a dev log into my account for me and TP me out.

Oleg Chebeneev I fell through my Sunrise Orbital Apartment in Anarchy Online. Literally stars in space. :p

My ESO characters frequently fall out of the sky. I usually get deposited in the sea amongst the slaughterfish. I fell a short way through the floor a couple of days ago and ended up eye-to-toe with the vendor I was talking to. I’ve had this sort of thing happen in most MMOs, but never with such frequency or predictability as ESO. It’s getting tiresome.

Had this happen in WoW during the first year. My character… didn’t die. In fact, it was falling for about 3 days as I waited for the customer support guys to get the right people to rescue my druid (long before we had flight form =(  )

Oleg Chebeneev Damonvile Yeah we all kind of get your lack of a sense of humor You really don’t need to provide any more examples. Maybe one day they’ll do a knock knock joke for you, or would you explain why that type of wood doesn’t sound like that ?

In World of Warcraft, I used to often fall through the terrain in Durotar, right out front of Orgrimmar. It made me a bit wary about going there. :P

In LOTRO, if you try to mess around with the landscape in order to access areas where you are not supposed to be there, you may fall out of the world. Turbine said that they need you to be stand still for GMs to unstuck you, so if you keep falling, considered your character a goner.

Oleg Chebeneev Damonvile Like I said… the problem isn’t the comic, it’s that you never get what’s funny about them. I’d explain it to you but after this long it’s pretty clear you just can’t understand this type of humor but sadly feel it’s everyone else that’s not getting it.

For some strange reason Mr. Chebeneev always has something negative to say Sword & Bored column. I suspect he’s pulling a Poe’s law. To which would make your gif more pertinent to you. :(

“World clipping”…so that’s what they call it. A long weirded out fall to death after stepping through buggy terrain is what I called it. Or in WoW tl,dr’s: Falling through the world. /splat

Not if it is Wildstar’s moon.   Space darkness and stars

As always this comic requires my corrections since it distorts facts. When you fall through landscapes in MMOs, its not space darkness with stars, its blue or grey tint.

A quote from nusquam aka Joel Bylos about on this topic:
“For the record, when the coder who implemented the physx code was done, he famously (and stupidly) stated proudly ‘Well, we will never have a /stuck report in a Dreamworld game again’. We bought him a mug with that quote on it, and we forced him to drink his own bitter tears from it for many years.”

I was playing Smite arena map once and Hades did his Ulti Pillar of Agony which pulls you in to him, I ended up popping under the Hades into the underworld so to speak.

“Another thing that got forgotten was the fact
that against all probability a sperm whale had suddenly been called into
existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.

And
since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor
innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its
identity as a whale before it then had to come to terms with not being a
whale any more.
This is a complete record of its thoughts from the moment it began its life till the moment it ended it.
Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm
down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is
it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I
suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any
headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall
call the world, so let’s call it my stomach.
Good. Ooooh, it’s
getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound
going past what I’m suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call
that … wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better
name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be
something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a
lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a tail – yeah,
tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow!
Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll
probably find out what it’s for later on. Now – have I built up any
coherent picture of things yet?
No.
Never mind, hey, this
is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward
to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation …
Or is it the wind?
There really is a lot of that now isn’t it?
And
wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very
very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name
like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name –
ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?
And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.
Curiously
enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of
petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated
that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we
would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.”

lol! I can so relate to this one, more so with the wife or someone riding me when I use one of the flying mounts that allow riders and you pass through a phase. Luckley engineering gliders save the day. I keep a stack of those and more in my storage vault, plus made sure the wife’s characters have them as well.

WoW is kind enough to kill you if you fall far enough below the world, but not kind enough to save you for the guaranteed res sickness from the experience (the map tends to show you body at the (0,0,0) point in EK, which is somewhere deep below the old Dalaran crater).

Craywulf  Great idea! I want them to be portals to a room full of those gnomes from Golden Axe.  Then you can kick them and they give you meat and potions, and when the timer wears off you go back to where you were.  :)

When strongholds came out in SWTOR I uncovered an early bug.  I was someone else’s ship and then went right to the stronghold.  I noticed the front door of my stronghold said “return to Fury” which was my friend’s ship, not mine (I was on a Bounty Hunter alt).   I tried it and got marooned on a prison ship with no amenities (terminals and such only load when the owner arrives) and with no way out.

The door to leave was supposed to take my to my last instance… but since the stronghold doesn’t exist when I’m not in it, it would fill the loading bar but nothing would happen.  I couldn’t travel back to the stronghold or use any other form of quick travel (cannot use this command here) or use the escape pod (FAIL).  I had to call them and explain the problem, after which an admin live teleported me out to the capital city.

Worst:  ESO – the screams that your character emits while falling a long distance would, at one time, cause you to be booted to login for spamming the server.  Meanwhile, certain places were frequent offenders for causing you to fall through the world.  The falling looped from the sky back toward the ground, to far below, and back again.  The area of the map would be off to the side a little, and you could try to move toward it so that you could stop the fall.  To stop, you had to manage to impact the ground and die.  The problem, of course, was that while trying to control your fall to hit the ground, you kept getting booted for spamming the server.
Best:  ESO x2:
Beta:  –  Horse hits board with slightly upward angle.  Horse starts flying.  Wheeeee!
Live:  –  Teleport into dungeon, I’m fine.  Guildies start porting in.  Second person is fine.  Third and Fourth are punted into the sky, falling into the water nearby.  The water has slaughterfish.  They die.  We all laugh.

Yeah, I don’t think I have ever had a /stuck command work when I actually needed it. After all these years, why do devs still make it not work if you are moving?

Age of Conan at launch, on the bridge in Old Tarantia connecting to the Noble District.

The death pit there was mighty. So many bodies under that bridge. SO MANY.

I’m always disappointed when the hole leads to nothing. For once I would love to fall in deep hole, only to land into a hidden zone. Most hidden zones are just behind a wall or pocket. None them ever feel like they are truly hidden. I think falling in pitch blackness for a long few second then landing in water, would be a freaky experience. Turn these map errors into legitimate adventures.

I remember falling down a random ‘pothole’ in Aion. Fell a few hundred feet into brown pixelated nothingness.

Took forever to get a GM to get me out. Teleport wouldn’t function.

And people say we don’t have enough space games…every game is a space game once you fall through the world.
