Build a stronghold to keep the monsters out in Fortnite

The world has ended… somehow. And you’re among the few human survivors in a sea of disagreeable monsters. What to do other than to regress to your childhood and make the swankiest fort ever?

In Fortnite, an upcoming title from Epic Games (Gears of War, Paragon), you’ll trade up your old blankets and pillows for sturdier construction materials. You and your fellow players will build bases, defend them from the monster population, loot all of the loots, and occasionally get into a scrap with your fellow gamer. Currently the title is in an ongoing alpha test, and if you’re interested in participating, you can apply on the website.

Regarding Fortnite’s planned free-to-play business model, Epic Games stated: “We want folks to be able to play the entire game and have a fun, complete experience without having to drop any cash, and we are designing the game with that in mind. Anything we put in the game for you to buy will be icing on top of other delicious icing already on the cake.”

I got into the alpha or beta or whatever they’re calling it last week and the game is actually pretty fun. My biggest complaint is the lack of character creation. There are different classes you can choose (like soldier or engineer) but you can only decide if they are male/female – no customization. This was weird to me because since you can choose the gender, I don’t really view the Engineer, for example, as a character like the Heavy in Team Fortress 2. But since I can’t customize his appearance, I don’t view him as an in-game avatar for myself either. I would like for them to either go all in on character customization or remove gender choices like in TF2/Overwatch – no half-measures. I would prefer the former for this game.

The game as a whole seems pretty polished from the few hours that I played. It has voice-overs, missions and everything. UI is cluttered but Epic should just release the game into early access, imo.

sounds interesting, and sounds like it could break the mold of survival games being nothing but  griefers, (i play H1Z1 alot)

i loved the idea behind Dayz and H1Z1 but the zombies are an after thought

Valhalla Awaits Epic finally found direction for Fortnite and its improving with every patch. I’m playing beta for 2 months and it’s pretty good.

mukk agemyth It is not a problem that they posted this. I was just curious why now all of a sudden when they still aren’t really promoting the game or opening testing up.
Maybe they wanted to populate Fortnite’s tag page for future coverage? :P

This is bordering on vaporware. It’s been re-launching into alpha a half dozen times over the past many years. (I know because I’ve signed up for the past 5 so-called alpha launches.)

So either vaporware, of stuck in development hell. Given they have actual screenshots, likely the latter.

Siphaed I’m pretty sure part of the delay was all the survival sandboxy games that came out in the meantime. They probably shifted design goals a couple of times.

Hmm, you missed the more obvious one

Why isn’t there an mmo (or any other survival game) where you do make forts from pillows and blankets? Sticks become swords, ice-cream tubs are helmets and planes are made out of cardboard boxes. The top level crafting materials are a pencil and toilet roll tube.

Backstory needed!

~Fortnite was revealed on December 10th, 2011! ~~Alpha test sign ups began in early 2014!!!! ~~Alpha testing began on December 2nd 2014! ~~The game was to shift to Beta  in Fall 2015, as announced in June 2015.~
~The game is STILL IN ALPHA PHASE TESTING! (Present day)

>So to sum it up,….a game announced at the tail end of 2011 -by a seemingly major games studio- hasn’t even come to a Beta phase over 4 years later. Over 4 years and they’re still doing “alpha testing”.     To put that into perspective, March 8th 2013 Richard Garriot announced SotA, launched the Kickstarter, earned the money, built the game, and it is becoming a launched -no wipes w/ cash shop- product on June 28th of this year!~  It is a ready-to-launch product, a grand scheme MMO with far more working parts than Fortnite, and 2 years younger as well.  Yet somehow coming to the public sooner?

I remember this game.   I remember when Epic said that they’d go back to their roots and care for the PC again.  I remember the lies sold in nice piles of bull droppings.   The internet remembers!

agemyth Better late than never? There are only so many writers/articles in a day/week/month?  This website didn’t exist [without its evil overlords] two years ago?  I could go on…

You made a mistake in the name of this game – it is Fortnite, not Fortnigt :D

Just couple days ago I’ve said how I want a game where I could build a village/town (+ a “mayor” toon) and trade with nearby towns (and/or pillage them) rather than developing a single toon #50. Although I meant something like Majesty Online – not yet another guild hall building (which is already available in Neverwinter or EVE).

PurpleCopper umh.. there is no persistent open world in Fortnite. Every mission you start base building from scratch. Gameplay is more similar to tower defence games than DayZ H1Z1 Rust

Only problem I see with this game is that the players become too competent and build a impenetrable fortress of rape and death.

I keep thinking of all those survival games where you build a home, gather resources, and fend off monsters. But in those games it seems way too easy to become a wealthy king in a castle armed with a machine gun capable of killing any monster that comes your way.

The only real danger in those games is other players trying to screw you over.

Pretty good game. Epic release constant updates with new content and polish. There is already a lot of PvE content and they’re working on PvP now. I’ve had ton of fun playing Fortnite coop with friend and looking forward to release.

mysecretid tylercles It actually isn’t that kind of “survival” game. Although details are still vague, the game seems to be much more traditional. Think of cooperative wave-based survival modes in shooters like Gears of War’s Horde mode. Fortnite seems like that but with the main form of defense being in building traps/turrets and stuff you might see in a tower defense game.
Seems like resource gathering is a thing, but not the way you do in Minecraft/DayZ.

Yeah, I’m very tired of “murder simulator” type open games as well — in part, because of the inescapable asshattery they encourage, but also largely because they all become so “same-y” . Even the asshattery falls into the “same shit, different game” category. Yawn.

So, yeah, this could actually be something interesting, I agree.

Quincha Somehow I live in a world where I am playing the Paragon alpha before the Fortnite alpha… This game seems to be in one of those good old 6-8 year development cycles.

Kinda weird that this article is going up now since there isn’t any news (afaik) related to the game unless you are in the alpha that has already been running for at least two or three years.

http://massivelyop.com/tag/epic-games/ (Gears of War, http://massivelyop.com/tag/paragon)

I get that it’s been a long time since an Unreal game came out, but it feels like nobody ever remembers that Epic made those games : (
I mean, it’s not like they named an engine after the franchise or anything >.>

So basically it’s a post-apocalyptic survival sandbox that’s cooperative instead of being a murder simulator?

Colour me intrigued.
