WRUP: Things to cry about edition

Do you ever want to cry but find yourself unsure about a reason? Like you just have a whole lot of sadness, but you don’t have a reason to cry so you feel like it would be selfish to do so? Well, today we’re going to give you reasons to cry, starting with the fact that you are so entitled that you think you need a reason to cry when you can’t come up with one.

Seriously, how self-indulgent is that? Your life is so great that you have no reason to cry, but you want to just “get it out” or whatever? You’re being absurdly selfish and probably lying to yourself. If you can’t think of a thing to cry about off of the top of your head, you are probably either not actually in need of a good cry and almost certainly treating the pain of other people like some kind of theme park.

Also, we’re going to all have to see Carrie Fisher in The Last Jedi, and that’s going to just be sad on every level. In addition to leaving your weekend plans in the comments of this week’s What Are You Playing, feel free to also leave your own favorite reasons to cry.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): It’s probably for the best there’s an Easter event in Pokémon Go I’ll try to hit hardcore to burn off chocolate egg and peep calories. The “genki” (energetic) Japanese grandma that also plays in my town has been super hardcore since the event started, so at least I have a benchmark to try to meet. I want to say Overwatch will happen since I love that Blizz has put more of their lore in the game (and I generally am not big on Blizz lore), but the new skins aren’t doing much for me beyond Genji, who I already have a sweet skin for.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I won’t get much time in at all this weekend, but I’m still doing Guild Wars 2 Super Adventure Box, and yesterday I was watching my kid playing Trove and got such an urge to jump in, so most likely I’ll do that next week when my guests are gone.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Still prepping myself for Stormblood in Final Fantasy XIV, still working slowly through my second playthrough in Mass Effect: Andromeda, and still playing Black Desert for Choose My Adventure. I’ve got the vague hankering for something else, but until I can actually identify what it is beyond “something,” I’ll stick with those three.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I’ve recently gotten back into Guild Wars 2 for some casual MMO playing, which is fitting my mood perfectly. So I’ll most likely be leveling up a new Thief and kicking myself for not buying Heart of Thorns when it was on sale.

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, blog): I’m looking over my gaming list and feeling a bit paralyzed. So many things to do, I don’t know how to pick! I think I will spend some time in EverQuest II. There is also a dungeon boss in Conan Exiles that need a whoopin’. I’m also keen on spending a bit more time in the skies of DC Universe Online. Any extra time will be spent with my dinos in ARK: Survival Evolved.

Eliot, are you okay man? That was a pretty messed up into to WRUP.
Here’s the thing. I’ve been playing a lot of Path of Exile and Tree of Savior lately.
What I like about that combo is that they are such totally different games, it offers a beautiful break from each other. When I can’t take the boring ass grind of Tree of Savior any more, I switch to Path of Exile. When I can’t take any more black magic, brutality, blood, and death, I go kill some onions in Tree of Savior. My goal is to use both of them to make it to end game in each.

Mostly MEA. 2/3-3/4 through the game, struggling/enjoying through. Still playing Multiplayer, all Bronze/Basic Packs, but will hopefully be done that stage soon. Had my fill of Human Male Engineer and trying out Human Female Soldier. I likey ‘Turbocharge’ (the new ‘Marksman’).

I jumped back into LOTRO after a long break. Missed playing my Warden, so i’m hoping to actually get a toon past lvl 30 this time. Plus i created a Captain to play with a friend, but the screaming is slowly getting to me.

Everquest: Been having loads of fun despite the dated graphics (I just got into this game. I started on EQ2).
Tree of Savior: I’ve been having a hankering for some ToS
DCUO: Both on XBOX One and PC (Leveling a toon on Xbox and my old main on PC)

This weekend is mostly about Easter – hilltop sunrise service this morning, in-laws at the house today. I spent a chunk of time yesterday working on my private WoW Wrath of the Lich King server. I had updated it, and in the interim someone had updated the spawn timing tables to include a minimum and maximum table instead of just a spawn time, and initialized the max table incorrectly, so the server wouldn’t even start. I rebuilt the table, setting all the max spawn times to min spawn times + 120 secs, and everything is up and running now. Happy Easter everyone!

Edited to fix a typo (and probably add a few new ones).

Started playing Warhammer 40k: Eternal Crusade, which I’m enjoying quite a bit despite it including some things that will typically keep me from enjoying PvP in a game. It certainly doesn’t seem to deserve all the negative reviews that it has received, which I can only assume are a result of the game not being the product that the original developers had promised and less to do with the actual game as it is.

Still dedicated to Path’s league. I’m at lvl 88 with 20 league achievements so I’ll probably be able to pick up the second item and some other junk.

I finished installing a nice border on my driveway with pink and white begonias with Joseph’s coat at the front for a pop of color. Maybe I’ll put in a few pics tomorrow.

I recently installed irrigation at my house, am personally building a patio with an antique syrup kettle/oyster pit as a centerpiece and some other junk. I have multiple trays of seedlings I ache over every day. My home is hitting a renaissance after years of struggle and I am absolutely obsessed with it. I check the plants around my home a few times a day. Plants are taking over video games as my obsession in very quick manner.

People around the neighborhood are starting to offer me paying jobs so I’ll probably transition to it as a full time paying gig soon. Level up!

Playing Cosmic Star Heroine.
It’s as if Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star never died and had a baby RPG instead.

It’s completely 90′, with nice 2D sprites and 2D cut scenes, an excellent soundtrack (no chiptune here, there are even vocal tracks which is kinda weird), a simple and fun space adventure with old school characters without going for full stupid.

But it really shines in combat. Turn based, but with no time wasted: you get fully healed after each battle, can instantly restart any lost one, you can see and avoid monsters… or just click a button to jump back into one if you want to grind (but there’s no need to).
This lets the whole gameplay shows its depth, with skills, items and “magic” (“programs” that you get accessto by equipping gear) usable only once per battle, until you defend and recharge your character skills (and the rest more rarely with some skill combos too). Everything is refilled for the next fight, no consumables needed.
No spamming here, you have to think of the right moment to use your skills, preferably when in hyper mode (very Final Fantasy Limit Break-ish, but on a turn timer instead… again, that can be modified in battle), when to recharge your abilities without exposing your whole team… and temporary buffs and debuffs are super important. They work on bosses! Even if they’re resistant to, say, poison, just use it multiple times to break the “poison bar” and you’ll benefit from constant damage the entire battle. That’s a game changer for that kind of RPG.

I expected a cool little indie RPG like the other Zeboyd games, instead I found a game that can easily compete with the best of the best; and plain exceeds 95% of turn based RPGs combat.

There is also a dungeon boss in Conan Exiles that need a whoopin’.

Make sure to murder everyone else in the group as soon as the boss is down so you don’t have to share the loot.

I’m on the tail-end of being sick so this weekend is probably a wash in terms of gaming. I’ll work in some Persona 5 or Cosmic Star Heroine if I can muster it, but otherwise it’s more laying in bed and falling asleep while watching movies for me.

BalsBigBrother

Hope you feel better soon o7

Reader

Still working through persona 5 (when I have time), but I did download the PS4 version of Skyforge & have to say that it is much more comfortable to play on the couch.

…. Almost as if this game was designed for consoles from the start & that the entire escapade of this games PC “release” was just an extended beta while they got the game console ready.

I’m playing Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition. I played Dragon Age before, but never with any of the DLC. I’m hoping to use the end save file to transfer over into Dragon Age 2, which I’ve never played before. I just hope I can make it through the whole game. The combat is proving to be more tedious than not. I was never a big fan of it.

I know time is running out for the free ESO trial. I also know it’s a huge download which I’d probably have to leave for an overnight thing.
Oh and then there’s a, let’s say, secret beta I’ve got to give a go at as well. I’m glad to have gotten in, but I only got the e-mail late at night so I was in no mood to start with that.

Have a good weekend all. You can totally cry if you want to!

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

The implementation of DAO–>DA2 transfer is spotty at best, with some distinct bugs. If you can find a save file editor of some sort, if you’re on PC, try that out.

But on the other hand, DA2 really does not reference DAO a lot. DAI probably does so more than DA2.

With little to do in FFXIV till the expansion in 9 weeks AND NO GODDAMN SWITCHES TO PLAY MY COPY OF ZELDA ON IN STOCK YET! i’m deep in the Persona 5 hole and i’ll be damned if this isn’t the best jrpg since the early PS2 days. Finally the sub genre got the title it deserves this gen.

Reader
Xijit

No shit: I think the last real JRPG that was actually plot driven (instead of just a pile of minigame bullshit / a dolled up mobile title with no plot) was Tales Of Vesperia.

Reader
Danny Smith

I think the only other straight jrpg i even enjoyed last gen was Eternal Sonata and even then that was mostly art style and music and a very strange, meta plot. For the most part the genres really withered on the vine outside handhelds.

Reader
Xijit

Yeah, it is sad how the JRPG genre has fallen so low that even COD tries harder to have a coherent plot.

Reader
rafael12104

Persona 5. Yes. That is on my list. Try Nier:Automata, I think you will like it maybe even more.

I’m waiting on Zelda. I know what will happen once I start that game and I’d rather not until I have plenty of time. Oh, and be able to find a Switch in stock.

I’ve been enjoying Elder Scrolls Online a lot somehow. Like way more than I ever have in the brief spurts I’d pop into it. So probably gonna be playing that, Breath of the Wild, League of Legends, and SMITE as sort of main stuff.

It is going to be a quiet Easter, which btw I love. No big family shindigs, no comitment to show up to brunch. Nothing on the agenda to eat up a big chunk of my weekend at all. Love it!!!

So, what is on tap gaming wise? Well, a lot actually.

First, BnS dropped Secrets of The Stratus this week and it is the best update since Silverfrost. I’m having a blast and I am frenetically trying to do everything as if there is no tomorrow for some reason. I’ve completed the story bits and I’m already wishing for more.

Second, Mass Effect Andromeda is still in my blood. I have finished one play through but I’ve started another with a difference combinations of skills and enjoying it. The last patch helped a great deal.

Third, I discovered Nier:Automata. It is one of the best video games I have ever played. I’m working through the different endings which build on each other and are an integral part of the game. I am reluctant though because… I can see where things are headed as I move closer to the final act and… oh man, the feels are overwhelming. The end of the story is going to be gut wrenching. Gut wrenching in a good way, if that makes sense.

So, three games, two days, and the refrigirator is stocked. It is going to be a great Easter weekend.!

Still soldiering on with my final toon in AoC before the lights go dark but might have to hit the brakes as ive been playing a little too much.
Apart from that listening to some Tuttys Underground tunes & ticking “not interested” on a lot of games in my steam queue. Got some loot burning a hole in my pocket & need to spend it before I blow it on lockboxes or some other junk.

Still playing Elite:Dangerous and having a blast.

Today I have been fiddling with a new E:D profile for voice attack that will allow me to get all my voice packs working together so it sounds like I have a proper crew on board. Now if only Frontier would allow me to create holome npc’s for the ships seats then my immersion would be complete.

Anyhow once that is all sorted I have been flying passenger missions in the Dolphin a new ship released in the recent 2.3 patch. I named mine “Deep Sea” , she is a nice ship to fly and I am enjoying being an intergalactic taxi driver / tour guide.

Don’t think there will be much else from me so I hope you all have a fun and safe gaming weekend. o/

I’ve finally got a character that feels good and intuitive in ESO, so I’ll mostly be playing that I think. Maybe some Marvel Heroes, but it’s mostly an ESO weekend. I’m kind of kicking myself for not having spent more time with this game before.

Secret of Monkey Island: Completed.
Syberia: Completed.
About to start either Deus Ex or Broken Sword.

Crawling through my GOG backlog one game at a time. (Oddly, most of these are games I’ve previously owned or played through, but that little ‘Completed’ mark is bliss).

I have been selling off stuff in my Steam acccount – those stupid cards & also Dota things I have collected as I watch tourneys. So about just under $20 trickled in my account this week and made me buy things. The trickle will probably continue for another month or so.

Some of the stuff I got was meh, but there was some good stuff.
Planescape Torment Enhanced: I wish it was a total redo – still ugly, but I had never played it.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: like H1Z1, but better and not by Daybreak so I could buy it.

Other than that just hitting dolmens in ESO to eat up my rested XP and doing the inventory bounce game.

About halfway to SagA* and I keep getting distracted by things like ringed water worlds and binary earth-likes that no one has ever seen before. I’m hoping to truck my usual 6k Ly/day but I may get distracted by nice weather and a little (big) thing I’m writing.

Later this afternoon is more ARK time. My partner has managed to tame, and then get killed, three Megalodons in a row. I walled off our little bay-harbor and need to finish placing enough foundations for our water-base to kill the wild spawns inside. Then we get a fleet of Megas, haul onto the raft, and go hunting for jellyfish, oil, pearls and all that jazz.

BalsBigBrother

Good luck with your trip. I almost accepted a 45 mil passenger mission for that one but I don’t think I am quite ready for that sort of commitment just yet so I bottled out.

Incidentally have you seen the website Elite: Dangerous Star Map? It’s a mapping site for the E:D Galaxy. It offers you a way to keep a record of where you have been on your travels which I find really useful and interesting.

It does require you to use a third party app, which you have to give you E:D log in details to but I haven’t had any issues with it and the benefits are really quite nice. You probably know this but thought I would mention it just in case :-)

Crow
Reader
Crow

I use EDDiscovery for most of that! The kind of games I’ve been playing (flight sims, mostly) have me running XPadder through VoiceMacro with third party stuffs all over.

EDDiscovery runs itself through EDSM and parses logs for even more data!

Here’s my flight log recently.

Reader
BalsBigBrother

Cool I will take a look at EDDiscovery as I don’t recall seeing that before. There are certainly a lot of apps / addons which are getting more and more sophisticated as time goes by.

While I do wish a lot of this functionality was available in game I still appreciate that we have access to them nevertheless :-)

ED, being what it is, has a crazy dedicated tool-producing community. Since they opened the journal API people have been doing crazy awesome 3rd party stuffs.

I use the stats mostly to keep up with my Ly/day targets and peek at routes. I’ve barely scratched the surface of what these programs can do!

I’m going to have about 150mil disposable credits when I get back to the bubble, and am considering going T-9 mission runner with fighters and turrets.
