WRUP: Is this what I wanted edition

So, for a very long time, I was one of the people crying out for making some of the many racial variants in Azeroth playable. It just makes sense. Now, World of Warcraft has added them… or is going to add them. Some of them. Some of the ones I don’t even particularly want, and some of the ones I’ve wanted for a long while. (And at least one that I never thought I wanted.) They’ve got new class matrices, they have different customization, they have a whole lot of different traits.

Is this what I wanted? I don’t know. It’s not quite what I wanted. But it’s close enough to what I wanted, right? I think I’m getting what I want. This isn’t like Demon Hunters, which I never really wanted until they were right here. But it’s also a weird feeling where I’m pretty sure this is what I wanted, except not entirely sure. I don’t know. Muse about it in What Are You Playing comments, why not?

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Probably just a little Pokemon Go and Overwatch this weekend. Events may be over, but PoGo was actually a bit better thanks to the event, and Overwatch reminded me that it can be fun when I’m not thinking about boxes and competitive modes so much (but it is hard to give up my Doomfist practice when we’re clearly losing due to lack of healers and tanks).

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I will be lucky to play anything; I’m playing stage manager for Eliot’s one-man BlizzCon show. But if I do, it’ll be the usual: Guild Wars 2, maybe Trove, potentially Ultima Online. Also my just Pixel shipped as I type this, four days early. Ahhhhh! So yep next week I’ll be playing the new phone game!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Oh, BlizzCon, you fill me with feelings. But I’m not going back to WoW, because this expansion is a year away at least and I’ve got things to do in Final Fantasy XIV and Secret World Legends.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): With BlizzCon a-buzzing and my Warlock finally at 110, chances are pretty good I’ll be playing some World of Warcraft. I’d also like to get in some time with Dungeons & Dragons Online (need to finish up the Harbor!) and Lord of the Rings Online before the weekend is through.

Your turn!

I finished Elex over the weekend! (Beserker Faction)
Enjoyed it, although it is not as good as Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 sadly, although I still feel Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are the two best RPG out there.

Never been as immersed in any other games.

I went back to WoW for the umpteenth time in early October, and I’m actually enjoying it quite a lot this go round. I started from scratch on a new server, and having a great time casually leveling up a class I’ve never played.

More titanfall, but I am getting tired of it because the waves are all scripted instead of random like they were in Titanfall 1.

So, just in case you didn’t know. THE HOUSTON ASTROS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!!!!

There, got that out of the way.

So, I’m going to have to put on my baseball manager hat. And while Destiny 2 has pitched some great innings, it’s time to put in my middle reliever, Wolfenstein 3. I’ll keep Assassins Creed Origins in the pen warming up, and Call of Duty WWII is starting to stretch.

BnS, is batting clean up. Too good of a player just to pitch, BnS has now been moved to first and an everyday player.

ASTROS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!! (Promise it’s out of my system now, maybe)

With Halloween over and all the hype dying down, I’ve settled into playing FFXIV as my main MMO and SWL as my secondary.

Interestingly enough, this is my fifth attempt at FFXIV and I got hooked on this one. Friends have been trying to drag me into this game a long time and now they can’t pull me out of the MSQ content to get me to do much of anything else! Oh! And chocobo racing. I’m addicted. I don’t like the aesthetic, don’t care for the way quests operate (go across the world, tell someone a thing, get sent right back to where you started, ad nauseum.) But what this game has going for it that I can’t find anywhere else in the two things combined is an awesome RP community and a really great community in general. I’ve enjoyed chucking the PTSD-like symptoms I developed in grouping with strangers in games like WoW, and this sort of freedom is something I’m running with.

SWL is only getting better. While it’s not optimal for RPing the way I enjoy, I only play this game for the story, really. I just like logging in, turning up the volume and getting immersed. It’s enjoyable.

Still up to my neck in ESO Clockwork City. Really liking the stories and the whole art deco vibe. I picked up the two Witcher 3 dlc’s a couple weeks ago when they were on sale so I’d like to dive into those as well if I can tear myself away from ESO/Overwatch long enough.
Have a great weekend everyone! =D

I’m still exploring Egypt in AC: Origins for the most part. I’m so impressed with this game on many levels.

I finished leveling RDM to 60 on FFXIV, just to say I did it, even though I’ve decided to take DRG into the expansion instead. Though before I even start SB, I’m going to level ARC to 30 to unlock BRD so I can be ready when Perform releases. I hope your ability with Perform doesn’t somehow get better the higher level you are; I really don’t want to take BRD to max level.

In between those two games, I’ve been playing a game called 2Dark, which was made by the creator of the original Alone in the Dark. It’s more horrific than scary, with macabre imagery and disturbing situations. But despite not being scary like your average survival horror game, it’s still amazing. The soft voxel characters over pre-rendered backgrounds is a unique look and the plot has me hooked.

And finally (because I totally have time for it!) I started Dragon Quest 3. It’s the only mainline game I haven’t finished. Except for 10, because COME ON SQUAREENIX!!!
Anyway, you take a personality test at the beginning. And I was like, “Yeah, whatever, starting stats stuff probably.” But then the game shoots out a strangely personal and rather scathing indictment about how lazy I am. x____x

Yeah I would be interested to know some more details about what you think of Origins. I have looked at it a couple of times and at the moment I have it in my buy if it gets discounted list.

Reader
nobleeinherjar

As a disclaimer, I’m a huge AC fan, with the caveat that I never finished Unity or Syndicate (though I liked them both–Syndicate moreso), haven’t played any of the side games (except Liberation), and haven’t cared about the modern-day plot since the end of AC3.

AC Origins is the best time I’ve had with an AC game since Black Flag, which doesn’t surprise me since Origins was made by the same team. Like Black Flag, it feels like the devs focused on making a good game first, and making it an AC game second. Still, I would say Origins is a great game and a good AC game.

That being said, they could have stripped the AC elements away and just called the game The Last Medjay and make it about the main character’s journey through Egypt and I’d still love it. It’s one of the most expansive and gorgeous open worlds I’ve ever explored, and the exchange of collect-a-thon busywork for dozens of story-based sidequests really fleshes out Egypt and its culture. And while the plot is good, what I enjoy most are those side-quests. The main character, Bayek, is a refreshing protagonist. He’s out for revenge, but he’s not a stone-cold, emotionless kill-joy. Nor is he overly sarcastic. His anger is tinged with a sense of loss and desperation, but he still takes time to find joy and beauty in his world, and he loves his wife.

The gameplay is fun and mostly sticks close to other AC games in terms of stealth. The climbing gives me a real Breath of the Wild vibe, minus the stamina meter. Working to farm mats for equipment upgrades is fun and satisfying. Combat is fun, but I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily better than the combat in previous games. It’s just different. Honestly, I think the new RPG elements could have been fit to the old games’ paired-animation combat to great effect. The music is also beautiful, a mix of Egyptian themes and synth sounds. But it feels kind of sparse. I enjoy the ambiance, but sometimes it feels like the music doesn’t play often enough.

The skill tree is mostly well done. There are only a handful of skills that you pretty much HAVE to get. Otherwise, you’re free to branch out as you desire.

If you’re any kind of fan of open world games, Origins is worth it for the world exploration and little personal stories alone.

Reader
Sorenthaz

Okay sweet, thanks for the impressions. I’ve been hearing some pretty good stuff about it and Black Flag was easily the best of them (still need to finish that). Guess I’ll grab it whenever it’s on sale.

Reader

One thing I forgot to mention is that the first act of the story is really rushed and a bit incoherent. But they do eventually explain what happened in flashbacks and stuff.

The gear grind in FFXIV has been going well for me. I have been able to do the alliance raid which is something I always enjoy (aside from that one DPS who always has to pull the boss while people are still watching cutscenes). Next up for me is breaking into raiding with Omega. My item level is as current as it’s been in years which makes me feel like a real tank again since I can pull multiple groups of mobs without getting wrecked and switch my playstyle from keeping threat to doing more DPS. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I’ve been looking at some of the Blizzcon coverage, but WoW is just really not for me anymore. I do kind of miss the times when I was playing heavily from BC until the end of Cata, but as you can see in my previous paragraph, I’m looking ahead, not backwards. I actually tried going back to WoW for a few months at the beginning of the year since some people claimed Legion was more of a return to the old days, but I still wasn’t feeling it. That’s an awful lot of words for me to say, “no, I don’t plan on going back to WoW any time soon.” :P (But best wishes to you, if you are.)

This week: Watching the WoW ticker feed from BlizzCon. And trying to bite my tongue and pigtails if I find something disagreeable with it. So far, I haven’t been very successful in that. :(

Also: Nothing really else…save from Levelling a Disc Priest. Never managed to get a Priest over lv 24 in any game (even in GW1)…now I’ve gotten one to the big 6 0! Still got a ways to go. As she is also taken up the Enchant/Tailor troupe as the main professions…which is asinine to skill up as everyone has warned about from the Forums. /sighs

Have a great week and weekend everyones though! <3

Reader
TomTurtle

I remember doing enchant/tailor on my priest years ago and how much it was a money sink and how easy it was to outlevel my profession skill level resulting in having to hoard unusable materials unless I wanted to stop my leveling progression and farm the relevant mats.

I know sellable enchantment scrolls eventually became a thing, so that’s a minor offset, but I doubt it makes up for it. Good luck with that one. Yikes!

(I was insane enough to try to level up every minor profession I could on top of that combo, meaning First Aid, Archaeology, Fishing etc. Yeah, I was a glutton for punishment.)

I’m so frustrated with the state of crafting in WoW that every time I’m leveling an alt I just go with dual haresting skills (mining/skinning) and clean up on the AH. It easily pays for pretty much any equipment upgrades I need for any given level. Also, I find leveling faster than with a production skill.

So thrilled to have been so wrong about whether I’d enjoy Destiny 2. I’m going at things very deliberately, so I’m making my way at a rather slow pace toward a possible raid power-requirement. But I’m not fussed still exploring, and having a grand time experimenting with different weapons load-outs and accumulating proper legendary gear.

Hand Cannons may be slow, and have limited ammunition, but it is so very gratifying to *pop* most mobs with one shot. Also…like many have said, it’s a shame the shaders (dyes) are single use consumables, but waiting to use the really good ones on the exotic/legendary gear has worked out well. Some have complained the game turns into a fashion show. Well, I love that part! I’m starting to really like the look of my Warlock. :)

After breaking many things over the years, usually playing rugby (but also cricket), I discovered that not much can often be done for a broken toe, apart from taping it off to the one(s) nearest it for stability. Perhaps you received something good for the pain, though.

Been playing World of Warcraft like a mad (but happy) beast for much of the week.

The announcement that the game’s next expansion will contrive to pit the two sidea at war (yet again) has dimmed my enthusiasm a lot though. I expect I’ll bolt when the new content drops.

I went back and poked around with Destiny 2 on my PS4. I still love the game, but I’m very glad there’s new content coming!

Lastly, I’ve been playing Planetbase again on Steam.

For those who don’t already know, Planetbase is a hybrid base-builder/strategy single-player science-fiction game.

The strategy aspect lies in the fact that each game starts with randomly-generated planet terrain, so you must not only build, maintain, and expand a functioning space colony (on a variety of planet types of your choice), but you have to build it all within the physical limits of the random planet terrain you start with …

If this sounds interesting to you, I recommend Planetbase — just be sure to play the tutorials over a few times (you will die a lot in these, at first) until you get a sense of how you want to establish a “survival-level” build order quickly.

Your colonists land with supplies, and maybe five (?) real-time minutes of oxygen, so you have to get a basic live-able structure started for them before their air runs out. It’s not always as easy as it sounds.

Have a good week, everyone, and please be kind to yourselves — you remain the only you that we’ve got, or that we’ll ever have, and we’d like very much to keep you!

Cheers,

Plugging away at Ye Olde Warframe as always. The latest dev stream has me looking forward to the new Focus system as they’re basically dumping the 2.0 system and going straight to 2.5 or possibly a 3.0. The 2.0 Focus really was that bad and am extremely pleased to hear them basically scrap it and do it over again. Thanks to the bug in Twitch drops I ended up getting 29 Exilus Adapters for free. Thanks Space Mom!

Actually making progress in Witcher 2. Finally killed that damned Kayran and am moving toward the end of Act 1. Feels good.

Getting back into the swing of things in Elite Dangerous. Gutted my Clipper and put most of the internals back into my FAS. Going to take it down to do the new rescue CG down near Maia. I do like Gutamaya ships but I find Core Dynamics ships just feel right to fly. I do wish the devs would move along with the Thargoid narrative though. So far all we’ve gotten is some CGs that aren’t unique and a handful of instances with Thargoids that don’t feel like an invasion at all. Elite is still a great game, but this whole Thargoid return has been a huge bust for me. Nothing interesting has happened with them at all.

It amuses me that the Horde and Alliance are getting their own version of elves that the other faction has had. Elves, elves everywhere!

Possibly some Makai Kingdom. I regularly watch one Let’s Player’s channel who plays a bunch of RPG’s, and I keep wanting to play games similar to what I watched. I’m still working through FFXIV:ARR, puttering around in Coerthas, trying to unearth some cultists, or something. I’m honestly not really sure, I just keep running about talking to people.
I’ll probably at some point log into Destiny 2 on PS4 just to gain a couple of power levels, I’m not raid level yet, nor do I think I’ll ever get around to raiding, but I might as well inch my way up for the DLC I guess.
I bought my wife CoD:WWII for the PS4 and while she’s not much of a gamer these days, she’s got an obsessive spot for WWII and I’ve been watching her play, which is damn hilarious. It took a dozen times to get across the beach ten seconds into the game.

Project Ascension is my main game atm. It is classless FFA PvP WoW where players drop loot in PvP and where you can hunt for REs (random enchantments) like Diablo 3. Almost finished leveling my third 60 level there since its x9 rates weekend atm.

Well two things happened this week.

First my internet is now firmly in the future well not really but 36 mbps down / 2 mbps up (to be upgraded to 9 by end of Nov) is certainly a big step up from 5 mbps down / 0.5 mbps up. I download GTA 5 in less than 3 hours that sucker took me days when it launched.

Also I now own a steam controller and been trying figure out all its features. In games its not been so bad and it has been surprisingly easy to get going. Just pick the highest rated community config and away I go for the most part though with some fumbling until I get used to the set up.

The hard bit for me is having to use the big picture mode of steam it just feels so wonky and cumbersome plus I keep getting lost in it trying to find certain features. I guess I will get used to it eventually, maybe.

As a first impression I am quite impressed with the SC and it certainly makes playing games less tiresome on my hands, which is the reason I got it in the first place. Just going to take me a while to figure out all the options so I can set up my own configurations.

Oh yeah games um all of them well not really but I have been downloading a lot just to try out the steam controller. I have been playing Grim Dawn and Path of Exile a lot, both of which work surprisingly well with a controller. I have also lined up both GTA V and Skyrim Special Edition as I want to see how my new 1050 ti handles both of those games.

Well hope you all have a safe and fun gaming weekend. If you are in the UK be extra careful with the Bonfire Night festivities and remember to keep you pets safe from all the fireworks. o/

Are you using the steam link box or your own deaL BBB?

The steam controller comes with a usb dongle that you just plug into your computer and after a short install you are pretty much good to go.

The steam link is only required if you are streaming a game to a tv that doesn’t have a direct connection to your gaming rig and I assume it replaces the dongle when that is the case.

Built a rig with a 1050 Ti just after the card came out. It has been able to handle everything I’ve thrown at it with max or near max video settings. Great card, especially in the performance to price ratio.

the thing about big picture i still find amusing to this day is it’s literally copy pasta of vista’s much hated MCE ux but for some reason gets praised while MCE was pretty much universally hated to the point they changed it back on xbox.

irl friend asked me for help with a gaming pc for his son and i made sure that the 1050ti was the gpu included. idk if he is gonna go with my recomendations but i gave him some options anyway to look at.

I’m playing a lot of things so far this weekend. My weekend gaming started early as I was home sick yesterday (though not so sick that I couldn’t game on my laptop!) I’m still playing Rift but that’s slowing a little bit. I need to get back to PoA zones but I’ve been spending most of my time doing Autumn Harvest stuff.

I started playing Atlas Reactor about a week ago and I’m really enjoying it, especially the Fourlancer mode where you control all four of the characters against an opponent doing the same. It gives the game a board game feel. I’m definitely going to buy the “All Lancers” pack but not until there is a sale. If you like strategy and don’t like the twitchy elements of most MOBAs this is worth checking out.

And then AR led to me wanting to check out Paladins again. A lot has changed including almost double the number of heroes but it’s still a fun game. I prefer it to Overwatch. I’m also downloading it on our family computer so that my son and I can play together. We didn’t have two computers until recently so it’s still kind of new for us to be able to game together. The family computer is an apple though so it restricts what options we have.

What a happy day, even if it’s a bit crappy outside. Still flying high from the Blizzcon news.

I decided to stop playing my WoW main so I could start fresh when zone scaling goes into effect. It didn’t take long to realize that going cold turkey wasn’t an option, but this morning it hit me that this is the perfect time to goof off and experiment: try different race & class combos, see the different starting regions, play for 10 levels then delete, rinse, repeat. I very much enjoy exploring the world so I already know I can keep myself occupied for however many weeks it takes for the update to come. Have a nice weekend everybody!

Splitting my time between FFXIV and WoW (Thanks BlizzCon!) for the next 24 hours. It’s Extra Life day. Am starting the stream in just under three hours. :) Check it out if you like!

slowly chipping away at the end game gear grind of destiny 2this week and sampling the various endgame activities at a glacial pace when my platofrming induced anxiety allows it. and also derping around on my warlock alt a bit trying out jose’s cheaty speed leveling thing which i think i will skip as it’s rather tedious if faster than normal maybe? Oo

also derping a bit not much in a super cool NDA test group game that widened itself dramatically this week and added some neat things including smaller group and solo options not yet shown publicly. and learning the importance of parking with a mind towards how one will disembark later… >>

we tried cruucible this week as the gear grind governs all things in d2’s endgame play and ofc once a week crucible gives the good stuff if you do it twice so that’s what we did. i was kind of surprised at how much more decent and unlike most rpg/powers shooters i’ve played it is. which is the subject of this week’s video share!

Don’t forget to look for the NPC Vendor Xur every week — best way to get some higher-end gear relatively cheaply!

I’m in the same boat. It may not be exactly what I wanted, but in my opinion, it is totally good enough.

As to what I am playing: Injustice 2, AdventureQuest 3D, Elvenar, Game of Thrones Ascent.
