WRUP: Is this what I wanted edition

So, for a very long time, I was one of the people crying out for making some of the many racial variants in Azeroth playable. It just makes sense. Now, World of Warcraft has added them… or is going to add them. Some of them. Some of the ones I don’t even particularly want, and some of the ones I’ve wanted for a long while. (And at least one that I never thought I wanted.) They’ve got new class matrices, they have different customization, they have a whole lot of different traits.

Is this what I wanted? I don’t know. It’s not quite what I wanted. But it’s close enough to what I wanted, right? I think I’m getting what I want. This isn’t like Demon Hunters, which I never really wanted until they were right here. But it’s also a weird feeling where I’m pretty sure this is what I wanted, except not entirely sure. I don’t know. Muse about it in What Are You Playing comments, why not?

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Probably just a little Pokemon Go and Overwatch this weekend. Events may be over, but PoGo was actually a bit better thanks to the event, and Overwatch reminded me that it can be fun when I’m not thinking about boxes and competitive modes so much (but it is hard to give up my Doomfist practice when we’re clearly losing due to lack of healers and tanks).

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I will be lucky to play anything; I’m playing stage manager for Eliot’s one-man BlizzCon show. But if I do, it’ll be the usual: Guild Wars 2, maybe Trove, potentially Ultima Online. Also my just Pixel shipped as I type this, four days early. Ahhhhh! So yep next week I’ll be playing the new phone game!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Oh, BlizzCon, you fill me with feelings. But I’m not going back to WoW, because this expansion is a year away at least and I’ve got things to do in Final Fantasy XIV and Secret World Legends.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): With BlizzCon a-buzzing and my Warlock finally at 110, chances are pretty good I’ll be playing some World of Warcraft. I’d also like to get in some time with Dungeons & Dragons Online (need to finish up the Harbor!) and Lord of the Rings Online before the weekend is through.

I finished Elex over the weekend! (Beserker Faction)
Enjoyed it, although it is not as good as Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 sadly, although I still feel Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are the two best RPG out there.

Never been as immersed in any other games.

I went back to WoW for the umpteenth time in early October, and I’m actually enjoying it quite a lot this go round. I started from scratch on a new server, and having a great time casually leveling up a class I’ve never played.

More titanfall, but I am getting tired of it because the waves are all scripted instead of random like they were in Titanfall 1.

So, just in case you didn’t know. THE HOUSTON ASTROS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!!!!

There, got that out of the way.

So, I’m going to have to put on my baseball manager hat. And while Destiny 2 has pitched some great innings, it’s time to put in my middle reliever, Wolfenstein 3. I’ll keep Assassins Creed Origins in the pen warming up, and Call of Duty WWII is starting to stretch.

BnS, is batting clean up. Too good of a player just to pitch, BnS has now been moved to first and an everyday player.

ASTROS WIN THE WORLD SERIES!! (Promise it’s out of my system now, maybe)

So happy the Astro’s won! What a great series! As a life long Cubs fan I have some experience on waiting for a championship. =P

Oh yes. You know what it is like. I was happy when the Cubbies won it for that reason and now, it’s our turn. :)

And New Zealand beat the Evil Empire (India) in a T20 Cricket match yesterday. So hooray for your Astros and my Black Caps!

World Series, huh… what sport is that? I want to say rugby, but the costumes look like it could be cricket or field hockey. Well… whatever… I know it’s the one where the team that manages to have the fewest scoredowns against their tether post that gets the dunksmash. Go team!

With Halloween over and all the hype dying down, I’ve settled into playing FFXIV as my main MMO and SWL as my secondary.

Interestingly enough, this is my fifth attempt at FFXIV and I got hooked on this one. Friends have been trying to drag me into this game a long time and now they can’t pull me out of the MSQ content to get me to do much of anything else! Oh! And chocobo racing. I’m addicted. I don’t like the aesthetic, don’t care for the way quests operate (go across the world, tell someone a thing, get sent right back to where you started, ad nauseum.) But what this game has going for it that I can’t find anywhere else in the two things combined is an awesome RP community and a really great community in general. I’ve enjoyed chucking the PTSD-like symptoms I developed in grouping with strangers in games like WoW, and this sort of freedom is something I’m running with.

SWL is only getting better. While it’s not optimal for RPing the way I enjoy, I only play this game for the story, really. I just like logging in, turning up the volume and getting immersed. It’s enjoyable.

LoL, Overwatch, Starbound, FFXIV, and that one thing that I not be allowed to tell tales about.

Still up to my neck in ESO Clockwork City. Really liking the stories and the whole art deco vibe. I picked up the two Witcher 3 dlc’s a couple weeks ago when they were on sale so I’d like to dive into those as well if I can tear myself away from ESO/Overwatch long enough.
Have a great weekend everyone! =D

I’m still exploring Egypt in AC: Origins for the most part. I’m so impressed with this game on many levels.

I finished leveling RDM to 60 on FFXIV, just to say I did it, even though I’ve decided to take DRG into the expansion instead. Though before I even start SB, I’m going to level ARC to 30 to unlock BRD so I can be ready when Perform releases. I hope your ability with Perform doesn’t somehow get better the higher level you are; I really don’t want to take BRD to max level.

In between those two games, I’ve been playing a game called 2Dark, which was made by the creator of the original Alone in the Dark. It’s more horrific than scary, with macabre imagery and disturbing situations. But despite not being scary like your average survival horror game, it’s still amazing. The soft voxel characters over pre-rendered backgrounds is a unique look and the plot has me hooked.

And finally (because I totally have time for it!) I started Dragon Quest 3. It’s the only mainline game I haven’t finished. Except for 10, because COME ON SQUAREENIX!!!
Anyway, you take a personality test at the beginning. And I was like, “Yeah, whatever, starting stats stuff probably.” But then the game shoots out a strangely personal and rather scathing indictment about how lazy I am. x____x

So how does Origins match up to other ACs?

Yeah I would be interested to know some more details about what you think of Origins. I have looked at it a couple of times and at the moment I have it in my buy if it gets discounted list.

As a disclaimer, I’m a huge AC fan, with the caveat that I never finished Unity or Syndicate (though I liked them both–Syndicate moreso), haven’t played any of the side games (except Liberation), and haven’t cared about the modern-day plot since the end of AC3.

AC Origins is the best time I’ve had with an AC game since Black Flag, which doesn’t surprise me since Origins was made by the same team. Like Black Flag, it feels like the devs focused on making a good game first, and making it an AC game second. Still, I would say Origins is a great game and a good AC game.

That being said, they could have stripped the AC elements away and just called the game The Last Medjay and make it about the main character’s journey through Egypt and I’d still love it. It’s one of the most expansive and gorgeous open worlds I’ve ever explored, and the exchange of collect-a-thon busywork for dozens of story-based sidequests really fleshes out Egypt and its culture. And while the plot is good, what I enjoy most are those side-quests. The main character, Bayek, is a refreshing protagonist. He’s out for revenge, but he’s not a stone-cold, emotionless kill-joy. Nor is he overly sarcastic. His anger is tinged with a sense of loss and desperation, but he still takes time to find joy and beauty in his world, and he loves his wife.

The gameplay is fun and mostly sticks close to other AC games in terms of stealth. The climbing gives me a real Breath of the Wild vibe, minus the stamina meter. Working to farm mats for equipment upgrades is fun and satisfying. Combat is fun, but I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily better than the combat in previous games. It’s just different. Honestly, I think the new RPG elements could have been fit to the old games’ paired-animation combat to great effect. The music is also beautiful, a mix of Egyptian themes and synth sounds. But it feels kind of sparse. I enjoy the ambiance, but sometimes it feels like the music doesn’t play often enough.

The skill tree is mostly well done. There are only a handful of skills that you pretty much HAVE to get. Otherwise, you’re free to branch out as you desire.

If you’re any kind of fan of open world games, Origins is worth it for the world exploration and little personal stories alone.

Okay sweet, thanks for the impressions. I’ve been hearing some pretty good stuff about it and Black Flag was easily the best of them (still need to finish that). Guess I’ll grab it whenever it’s on sale.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the first act of the story is really rushed and a bit incoherent. But they do eventually explain what happened in flashbacks and stuff.

Soaking up the WoW news. Catching up on some of the panels I missed. Catching up on some Destiny 2 streams I missed. Not much in the way of games this weekend. If I do any gaming, I suspect it will likely be WoW related.
