What’s going on with Nerd Kingdom’s TUG?

Despite promises earlier this year that both communication and development would be ramping up, TUG seems to have fallen into a well of silence and inactivity.

Nerd Kingdom’s social sandbox was once an interesting and noteworthy project, sporting a stylistic design and boasting all sorts of social and emergent gameplay experiences. Back in February we traced the frustrating progress of this title, which was Kickstarted back in 2013 and has been subject to lengthy delays and project revisions ever since but still managed to raise $8.5M from investors two years ago.

So what’s going on with TUG at the beginning of 2018? Very little, unfortunately. The team’s most recent dev post on the game dates back to September 1st, talking about the material system. There have been no posts, no tweets, and no videos from the studio since then, prompting players (a mix of Kickstarter backers and Steam purchasers) to demand refunds and float the idea of a class-action lawsuit.

While there is always the room to be surprised, right now TUG is looking more and more like a crowdfunding disappointment. We will, of course, keep watching and will report if movement starts anew on this game.

Little update: Most of the people working on the game were laid off after yet another change of management back near the end of 2017. Even the founder of Nerd Kingdom left. Everyone’s under NDA and even those still there have been ordered to keep quiet about what’s happening at the company.

It’s been mentioned that the game is still being worked on but it’s hard to imagine what’s actually being accomplished considering the skeleton crew. I wish more people from the gaming media would poke around so we could get some definitive answers.

From the start it looked like a googly-eyed project with ambitious but unrealistic goals.

I don’t get all the Kickstarter entitlement rage though – you’re donating money for an idea you believe in; you’re not guaranteed to get anything back. Chalk your money lost to the learning experience of what flies and what doesn’t and invest your money smarter next time.

If only every failed kickstarter project would result a class-action lawsuit… maybe kickstarter itself should start selling legal services so their backers can sue their creators? Remind me when that happens, so I can bring my popcorn.

In October, there was a post on Twitter from GhostfromTexas, their lead tech dev, saying that 95% of Nerd Kingdom’s tech team (a good chunk of the studio) had been laid off. Link below:

Sad. I really liked how the game was looking.

I also backed this game and it was doing OK until it made that diversion to putting almost exclusive focus on development of the survival version when the base game wasn’t far enough ahead, which I think diverted too much resources. And then there was that crazy decision to start building the engine over. TUG was one of the games I predicted at the end of 2017 two weeks ago) that would eventually get an announcement this year that it was, in fact, really dead, lights out.

The latest Steam Progress Update was on March 3rd. It’s abandonware and I should probably remove it from my library.

Well, that’s one Kickstarter game that I back that’s dead. I guess the others are still ok though … even if Shroud of the Avatar has been an incredible disappointment.
