Dungeon finders — they’re great, right? They take away the hassle of forming groups and get scads of players into some of the most detailed hand-crafted content of MMOs. Ever since dungeon (LFG) finders landed on the scene and became game staples, experiencing group content in MMOs has become easier than ever.

Dungeon finders — they’re horrible, right? They’ve created an anti-social cesspool where players don’t talk but scream at each other, screw each other over for loot rolls, and have converted instance runs from epic struggles into routine drudgery.

Dungeon finders — blessing or curse?

Bannex19 Sure we do. We also remember making a note of mean players and not inviting them the next time. Dungeon finders exist only so antisocial assholes can still play the game. We shouldn’t be rewarding douchebag behavior.

I’ve backed Shroud of the Avatar to a larger amount than I should have. So I can have enough characters and never have to ever trade with anyone. Also, given that the devs intend to make it so PvP is unavoidable in certain parts of the map, I’m very unlikely to even look into the more open multiplayer mode where I can meet players from outside my friends list.

In other words, even among the players in those games, not everyone want this kind of old school mechanisms. Many of those old-fashioned games can be played as if they were a single-player game, which is what I do whenever the game doesn’t provide the niceties that allow me to interact with others without all the hassle I hate.

eLdritchMD chosenxeno My point is most people will sit and whine about wanting “old school” design Philosophies but when someone actually does it they don’t support the game. Big Game Studios are not going to do something as stupidf as not putting in LFD tools. It’s such a pointless whine. Blizzard isn’t going to remove LFD or force you to group. 
Are you supporting Pantheon? Have you purchased Shroud of the Avatar? Are you backing thew DAOC spiritual successor? Or are you just another whiner?

Also, I’m playing prog server EQ and a classic DAoC emu at the moment… but thanks for playing, mate.

Curse by far.  Anyone who thinks it’s a blessing is someone wanting a quick fix and can’t be bothered with questing.  They shouldn’t be playing MMOs to begin with.

Take WoW, the biggest sub-based MMO to date, as a good example.  People “whine” about how they can’t queue til 15.  Yes, the game actually makes you go out, be sociable and do some quests to start.  However, once you hit 15 there are many who never step foot outside a city again, leveling solely via dungeons.  This means that they will typically get undergeared, cannot progress any crafting and miss out on all the story, rewards and interaction out in “the world”.  These are the people that then complain when they hit the cap that they have nothing to do, because the dungeon runs are coming slower and with less variety.  Heaven forbid they *gasp* go outside and do some quests….

rottenrotny Coming from FFXI, I really miss the trek to our dungeon or exp farming zone. You’d sometimes have to fight your way through much more dangerous area to get where you wanted to go and while it wasn’t always fun (because when you’d die in that game you took a hit to your exp and had to run back….alone), sometimes you felt a sense of accomplishment. On top of that there was the exploration. I fondly remember passing through zones I wouldn’t NEED to go to for a long time and when you finally have to go there, not only do you know where to go but sometimes you think “oh, now I get to see what that castle (or whatever) was about”. I play FFXIV now and I like it and all but I don’t know or care about the world. Truly, there isn’t even much to see and that’s by design because everything is instanced now. Sometimes you can’t even SEE things until later and when you can it’s like pop in there, go through the linear dungeon, and then leave.

I hate them, personally. My first MMO was FFXI and I genuinely miss getting a group together to take on content. I farmed more friendships the 4 years I played that game than in any other MMO I’ve played for the last 10+ combined. I STILL keep in touch with FFXI friends through social media (since few of us play the same MMOs anymore). In every other game (WoW, SWTOR, RIFT, ESO), it’s just “people I know in the game” and nothing more. You bonded in that game because you had a reputation to maintain. If you were an a**hat, no one would group with you. Most people were nice to each other and that lead to conversions, which lead to REAL conversations, which, over time, turned into friendships. This type of thing is rare outside of raid groups and some people steer clear of those on virtue because those tend to be full of nasty elites.

I can’t really call it a curse either though because of the convenience factor. I just wish there were some middle ground.

I’ll take your word for it.  I do not have accounts with Facebook or Twitter.  Never even used either service and have no intention of ever doing so.  I consider them nothing more than electronic versions of the gossip fence and thus of no interest to me.
