Hellgate is shutting down its last server in the world

Hellgate is one of those titles that never quite seems to die; the former Flagship title has been resurrected and shut down so many times that you can be forgiven for losing track of all of them. Well, it’s closing again, and this time it feels a little more final than previously.

Hanbitsoft is shuttering the last Hellgate server in the world, which is located in Korea, on February 26th. If you’re shedding tears at this news, then don’t worry; we’re sure its corpse will be dug back up and Frankenstein’d to life again one day.

For example, as a VR game and a mobile title. Which are both allegedly in the works. Why? Why won’t you people let Hellgate die already?

Yeah it’s original, full title was Hellgate: London, but people shorten that.

It gets slightly confusing because (Chinese?) game company, Hanbitsoft, bought the rights and resurrected the game, but they changed “the feel” of the game substantially while doing so, bringing it more into line with certain popular asian models of gameplay design.

While I never liked the vibe of Hanbitsoft version enough to try it, others here have mentioned how Hanbitsoft never supported their version of Hellgate very much.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

For me, one of the best game trailers ever made. I still get chills watching the section in the church.

It’s tough because this game was never finished by Flagship Studios before it went under.  The bank that they still owed millions to actually whipped together a team to try and resurrect it, but taking another team’s code and running with it is harder than you think.  Some of the bugs and the original randomly-generated maps that would spawn without exits and such were removed, but all it did was leave the game even smaller and more repetitive than ever– which all harkens back to the fact that it was never finished in the first place.

The classes and the loot pinata were a lot of fun, and Hanbitsoft’s cash shop wasn’t “pay to win” or anything like that; I supported it just to try and do my part to keep this tiny little shooter/RPG hybrid going.  The similarity of most of the backdrops sort of wore out their welcome, though.

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for it anyway, and the whole thing was a tragedy in the business sense.

I think for every “game design school” that crops up in the USA, there should also be a corresponding “game business management school” that spawns right beside it.

They need to just let this poor beast die already. I still play the original release singleplayer every now and then, really fun game and IP that didnt get the chance it deserved.

I was never really close to this but are we talking Hellgate: London here? Or a type of spin off? Something else?

All I remember was the trailer for Hellgate: London way back when. Loved it and thought the world/theme had so much potential for some great stories – the lost track of it.
