Frontier hints at new game based off a movie franchise

Frontier Entertainment (Planet Coaster, Elite Dangerous) is brewing up something new in its game labs — but what could it be?

Gamasutra reports that the studio briefly announced to the London Stock Exchange it had secured the rights to an unnamed, well-known, and “enduring” movie franchise for its next title.

“We have chosen to license this particular IP to work with as our third franchise, because we believe we can create something very special,” said Frontier Developments Chief Executive David Braben. “It is creatively stimulating, already has a high worldwide profile, and is a perfect match for our expertise.”

Any thoughts as to what this may be? Lets start a Massively OP pool in the comments!

There haven’t been any Harry Potter games out in a while, however it will most surely be Madea Goes Online.

I think the James Bond franchise makes sense here as it is certainly an enduring franchise. It’s English which fits with Frontier being a UK company.

The cost of the rights are also likely within reach as there have been no new Bond titles since 2012 and Activision dropped their rights agreement about the same time. With the movie rights now up for grabs as well there are likely some additional liquidity options for EON (the ip owner of Bond) to sell the game rights (had to partner with MGM previously).

Reasons many of the comments about different things are probably not going to be correct.

1. Movie Franchise. Meaning more than 1 movie. Not tv show. etc. This narrows the possibilities significant.y

2. Enduring. Meaning primarily lasting in some capacity. Reboots of single movies(per #1 as well don’t count for this, including Dune(unfortunately).

3. High world wide profile. Since some movies are well known only in the US or the West, this narrows it down even further.

4. Most likely wont be sci-fi since that would be a conflict of interest with Elite Dangerous.

So then you have to ask what IP’s would a company like Frontier have the ability to buy into that would accept them and their studio for such a consideration. I don’t think its a super high franchise like Harry Potter nor a really low one either. I’ve a few theories but even thinking about those I doubt it because either the movie franchises haven’t done well not produced or planning to produce anything soon(ie Jurassic Park), or they’re well known but wouldn’t fit well as a sustainable mmo(like James Bond, Fast and Furious, etc).

Only one I can think of and its a stretch would be the Underworld Franchise but if so that’d be a bit wince worthy.

Are we sure the game is even a MMO? Nothing in the Frontier E’s announcement directly indicates it.

I’m gonna take a long shot and say Bond. Doesn’t get more enduring than that.

“The guild raid? What is it?”
“It’s an instance run organized by an association of players, but that’s not important right now!”

I’d be wary of starting into that, only to have it shut down so EA and Bioware can launch Spaceballs: The Old Republic: The MMORPG.
