Animal Crossing: Cherry blossoms, the Detroit Lions, and a politician’s island visit travelogue

What do cherry blossoms, the Detroit Lions NFL team, and NY representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have in common? Animal Crossing: New Horizons, if you can believe it. Seriously.

  • If you’re among those who missed out on harvesting cherry blossom petals during the extremely short cherry blossom season, then you could either wind back your Nintendo Switch’s internal clock or buy some from the market that has sprung up around the crafting material. Players are using Nookazon, an online trading and auction post, to sell off stacks of the now rare material for various items or big bags of Bells — one listing is selling 50 petals for 4 million Bells, and the site is currently showing an average price of 26k Bells per petal. This stuff is pink gold, apparently.
  • US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has apparently picked up the game for herself and opened up her DMs briefly in order to collect Dodo Codes and visit people’s islands. The sojourn was pretty short, but Ocasio-Cortez took part in some adventures and was even invited to be a guest on a talk show that takes place in-game. Who knew that was a thing?
  • Finally, the Detroit Lions NFL team used Animal Crossing as a vehicle to reveal the team’s 2020 regular season schedule, which is full of references that will either amuse you if you’re an American football fan or go over your head. Even so, it’s worth a watch for the sheer creativity.
