The Daily Grind: Would you ever consider multiboxing in an MMO?

The stuff that you have, does someone have a claim on it?

If you’ve ever read Bannable Offenses, a Final Fantasy XI comedy blog, you may remember when the blog’s supposed writer took control of the rest of his party. (The conceit of the comedy was that the writer was a GM who took a dim view of the game’s playerbase.) The whole joke relied around the idea that the other players were no longer in control… so everything in the party could just go smoothly, everyone was getting experience, and the main problem (other people) had been removed.

This is, in many ways, at the heart of multiboxing. This MMO would be a lot easier without all of the other people around. Of course, the trouble is that multiboxing is usually very complicated, requires a lot of hardware power, and doesn’t always give you much ability to get things done compared to simply… single-boxing, if you will.

But let’s avoid the hardware issues and potential thorny issues of permission. Would you even want to? If you didn’t have to worry about the control issues or just assume those are already solved, would you consider multiboxing in an MMO? Or does the very idea run counter to the way you want to play?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
