The Daily Grind: Do you use the same name in multiple MMOs?

No, this doesn't count.

A friend of mine uses the same name in every single MMO he plays. To protect his identity, I’m going to claim that the name in question is “BigDragonTickler.” Now… as a roleplayer, I don’t really understand on an essentially level why you’d want to name your character BigDragonTickler. For one thing, it seems like something no one would name their child, with the possible exception of Elon Musk. For another, it’s just not a great name. But hey, everyone knows him by that name.

“Oh, so you never reuse your names?” I most certainly did not say that. Actually, I have a pretty core stable of characters whom I roleplay and adapt and shift to various settings as I play them elsewhere. So I can definitely understand that impulse, as well as the simple joy of letting people know that if you see BigDragonTickler that’s the BigDragonTickler. So what about you? Do you use the same name in multiple MMOs? Or do you not worry about being that unified?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Same name since I was a wee teen and played dungeon and dragons with dice and the DM asked what’s your character’s name gonna be?

Depends on the type of game. If I go into a game with a view toward roleplay, I create fresh personas and names for them. If I go into a game knowing I won’t mess with it, I go by my internet name that I use for discord and everywhere else. Some games I can be both, like ESO and BDO have the account name, then the character name showing.

Yep. When you’re an altophile, having a stable of names you know, names you love on hand makes everything easier.

Also, it’s fun translating a character from one game to another. An elf in one game is a Vulcan in another an alien or mutant in another. A cat in one game is a Charr in another or a Caitian in another. 👍

I have a handful of character names I tend to orbit around, mostly because I like the way they sound. But since I make dozens of characters in a single game, and hundreds across all of them, I pick different names all the time.

No. Operations Security necessitates avoiding linkages between characters, thwarting enemies/stalkers from following/retaliating against me across games.

Yep. Have two names that I use depending on the nature of the game, whether it is questing/adventure or more building/community. Even in AO, I stuck to my regular naming convention and added class specific piece at front or end. Only exception was SWTOR because with the alts it didn’t feel right across classes to keep same name.

I posed a similar question on /r/mmorpg about a month ago, asking if people always use the same name or if they change it up from game to game.

The response was mixed. Some people like to change it up for fun or for the sake or RP—something that fits the world/race/class. Others keep the same name because it helps them reconnect with people they know from other games.

I’ve generally used the same name—Squid—since…huh, I don’t remember when I started using it. I used to use Swag or Captain Swag, but dropped it when YOLOswag became a thing. Its led me to reconnect with some people I know from past games, but to be honest, not anyone I actually wanted to reconnect with.

I’ll probably go with something different for New World.

I would if it wasn’t for the fact that I can’t stop making alts, so most of my characters are variations of the same name.

User/global name sure. I’m Peregrine Falcon in a lot of online games.

Character names? Sure, if the setting permits. Several of my old 1st & 2nd edition D&D characters have made appearances in CoH, GW2, BDO, ESO, Neverwinter and even SWTOR.

I have four names I’ll reuse if they fit the setting — aka it’s a fantasy game. They were old D&D characters that have been reused a few times over the many decades since I started playing. If the game setting doesn’t fit them then I won’t use them.
