The Daily Grind: Which MMO has an esports push but really, really shouldn’t?

Oh no.

Our long-time readers will know that I consider esports as anything but a net benefit for games, the video game industry in general, and MMOs in particular. They don’t bring anything good to the table and definitely bring lots of negatives. But there are some games that go even further in the direction in that they have an esports push of some sort that is a really bad idea. It means devoting time, energy, and money to promoting something that is actively detrimental to the game as a whole.

A lot of MMOs seem to have realized this over the not-too-distant past, of course; Guild Wars 2 stands our as a game that went all-in on an esports push before abandoning the attempt. So which MMO currently has esports as a cornerstone of its model and really should not? Regardless of how you feel about esports as a whole, which game seems to be expending effort to be taken seriously in that field and should really think twice?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
