I’m never going to not be a little sad about Champions Online. Not in the sense that it flopped in an unfair fashion; while Cryptic made some good decisions, it also made a bunch of bad ones, and those bad ones kicked it into the refuse bin pretty quickly. But it also stayed there when suddenly there was a huge desire for superhero media, and it has somehow stayed there ever since. I know why it got thrown out as quickly as it did, but I will never not feel it was a missed opportunity (even if I do quite like Star Trek Online, which wound up helping to sideline the game).

There are a lot of MMOs that are on life support, games like CO but also like RIFT or Secret World Legends where the lights are on but the developers aren’t home. Or employed. And if you love these games, perhaps there are moments when you can be honest with yourself about why they didn’t really get over. But today we want to look not at the games that shut down but the ones that are limping along because of bad management decisions, weak creative development, poor combat design, or whatever. Which MMO on life support do you think should have been a bigger success?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
