Fallout 76 begins testing fishing in radioactive and toxic waterways

Just because you can do a thing doesn’t necessarily mean you should. That goes for creating T. Rexes on islands or picking up a rod-and-reel for some fishing in highly radioactive waters. Then again, some of the most fun comes about when rules are broken, so we’ll not judge Fallout 76 too harshly for embracing the time-honored tradition of angling even if it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

In fact, Fallout 76 is going all-out with its new fishing system, which is currently on the test server. There’s a storyline, an upgradable fishing rod, and… a giant hermit crab that lives on a boat. Bethesda indicated that a variety of factors will influence your catch, including the quality of bait, the location, and even the weather.

Oh, and you’ll have stuff to catch all year long: “There are also 12 adorable axolotls to find. One of these glorious amphibians will be available for you to catch every month throughout the year.”

And as Amazon’s Fallout TV series works on its second season, Bethesda’s Todd Howard shared why the studio decided to go with a series rather than a movie, saying, “Fallout is such an amazing world–what would we really want to watch in it? Well, we’d like to watch the next story, or new stories in that world, as opposed to, again, in this instance, adapting a story we had told and kind of compressing it down.”
