There are a lot of games that we cover that shut down. The majority of those we see coming a mile away, whether or not that’s a particularly happy thought. I’m rarely sitting here stunned when a temport shuts down, for example, and there are a lot of games where the shutdown almost reads as a “wow, that only happened now?”
And then there are cases like City of Heroes, when everything seemed to be going fine and then all of a sudden it’s time to bid farewell. Disregarding the politics behind the scenes that explain everything, the point is that it’s shocking. It wasn’t something I expected to hear about or deal with, and when it did my reaction was a confused expression.
There are probably some shutdowns that everyone can see coming, of course; even if you’re only an occasional reader here, you can think of a few games that got hastily translated and ported with a lack of any real support. But there are always some that make you blink and shock you as something you didn’t see coming. So when has an MMO shutdown notice truly shocked you?
