World of Warcraft players lose a minipet and inventory perks if they don’t migrate their authenticator to the new Battle.net app

You might remember that back in July, Blizzard announced that that it would be moving its Battle.net Authenticator services over to the Battle.net mobile app, especially migrating its two-factor authentication tools into a single app on mobile. There wasn’t much of a strong call to action at the time; the company merely announced that it was possible.

But now it’s more than possible as it’ll soon be effectively required, as the company has made clear that the Battle.net Authenticator app is slated for execution at the top of 2024: “The Battle.net Authenticator app will soon be removed from all app stores and will no longer be available for download, [so] if you have not yet done so, you should migrate your Authenticator to the Battle.net Mobile App now! You will keep using the Battle.net Authenticator through the Battle.net Mobile App.”

Players can follow the detailed instructions for the switchover, just make sure you do it all in the right order so you don’t lock yourself out and wind up spending your afternoon in a customer service queue trying to sort it out.

The NA and EU explainer posts on the migration are a bit different; the European one makes clear that migration is “required” as of January 5th, but players who don’t migrate will simply find their old authenticator removed automatically (weirdly, the US version doesn’t explain this). Of course, if you let that happen, Blizzard will take away your World of Warcraft minipet. Consider that the “stick” for this PSA.

“When migration becomes required on January 5, 2024, users who have not yet migrated will have their old Authenticator removed from their account and will receive a password reset to their registered email inbox. Until the Authenticator is active in the Battle.net Mobile App, users will lose access to the perks associated with having an Authenticator on their account such as the Corehound pet, extra bag slots, and access to LFG features.”
