Anyone who says that graphics in an MMORPG don’t matter at all who is not playing a MUSH is gently lying to you because obviously they matter. But that doesn’t necessarily indicate how much they matter. Sure, graphics are nice, but you might be one of the people who genuinely does not mind that Tibia is a weird stretched isometric exercise. And if you are that person, hey, more power to you, I will go on at length about how Mega Man 7 actually has the best graphical representation of Mega Man that we’ve seen in a 2D game.
(Seriously, I know the 2D NES sprite is iconic, but I feel like people don’t appreciate how much the clean look of the SNES version kept the same basic stance and poses while also being much more expressive. Instead of the cartoony squishiness of Mega Man 8 we got a sprite that felt consistent and good. That game really gets slept on in general because there’s a lot of – wait, Bree is telling me I have to move on or she’s going to throw a turnip at me. All right.)
But how much do graphics matter to you? There are MMORPGs that look fine, there are ones that look good, and there are ones that look ugly. I have long stated that I am willing to overlook City of Heroes’ mitten hands and flat faces, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. But some games do just look too ugly to play, or at least not visually distinct enough to motivate me. And for some people there are games they love that would be more lovable if they were better-looking. So how much do graphics matter to you?
