The Daily Grind: Do you stick to a uniform naming convention in MMOs?

Names are always a contentious and personal topic for MMORPGs, as they are our “face” by which others know us. And there are really only two options when it comes to naming characters: You can pick wildly different names for each of your toons, or you can employ a uniform naming convention to help others recognize you.

Since I used the name “Syp” online, I use those three letters as a prefix to most of my character names: Syperia, Syppi, Syperstar, etc. That way, no matter which of my prolific alts I use, my guild easily knows who I am.

But then again, there are mods where you can put your actual or preferred name in parentheses after your character name, so it’s not as big of a deal to get experimental in the naming department.

So do you keep a uniform naming convention in MMOs or not?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
